Rhinelander High School released they hired RHS alumni Brianna (Gilbert) Scheuermann as head girls' volleyball coach after Coach Kathy Wawrzynowicz retired from the position in January. With careful consideration, district superintendent Kelli Jacobi selected Scheuermann on Friday.
Scheuermann graduated in 2015 and played four-years under Wawrzynowicz. In her senior season, she earned first-team selection in the Great Northern Conference while Wawrzynowicz was named Coach of the Year in 2014. Scheuermann was JV volleyball coach last season and also assistant coach in softball.
Last season the RHS volleyball team finished 30-40-3 overall and finished in fifth place in the GNC standings. The team lost several seniors including GNC player of the year Hope Wissbroecker who will continue playing volleyball at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater this fall.
The school district wanted to be sure Scheurmann was the best candidate for the position, which was the reason the hiring came only two weeks prior to practice beginning on Monday, August 13th. The Hodags will look to continue to build the volleyball program especially at the youth level under Scheurmann.
The varsity team will only get five days of practice before they take part in a four-team scrimmage at Merrill on Saturday August, 18th. Rhinelander will then host their home invite on Tuesday August, 21st and also participate in the Wisconsin Dells Invite held at Just-A-Game Fieldhouse on August, 24th. The Hodags open their GNC season on August, 30th on the road against Tomahawk.
