The Rhinelander High School track team took part in their second indoor meet of the year on and finished with four event wins on the night and a number of top-five finishes. Despite being on spring break, the Hodags had a number of highlight finishes even without a full-lineup at the Lakeland co-ed Invite Tuesday at Lakeland Union High School.
There were no team scores posted for the invite, but the RHS boys' team collected three wins an recorded 21 top-five finishes on the evening. While the RHS girls' team earned one event win and would add 11 top-five finishes on the evening.
Sophomore Rebecca Lawrence earned first in the girls’ high jump, which was the teams' only win on the night. Lawrence cleared 4-10 to beat Olivia Urmanski of Edgar, and she was just shy of clearing 5-feet on her second jump.
Freshman Megan Brown had a solid meet for the RHS girls' and recorded two runner-up finishes on the night. Brown was second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 8.20 seconds. And Brown also anchored the girls’ 4x160 relay that included; Mattia Beske, Lila Bielefeldt, and Lily Sneller that clocked in at 1:42.28. Brown also finished third in the long jump with a distance of 13-feet, 11-inches.
In the 55-meter hurdles, junior Morgan Johnson finished third with a time of 11.12 seconds and she also placed fourth in the 400 at 1:23.27. Fellow junior Lexi Morrison finished third in the 800 (3:26.76) and also finished fourth in the 1600 (7:15.17).
Senior Abigail Gechas would finished fourth in the 800 for the RHS girls' and senior Mattia Beske also added a fifth place finish in the 400. And sophomore Shawna Will recorded fifth in the shot put with a distance of 28-feet, 0.50 inches.
On the boys' side, Rhinelander finished 1-2 in the high jump, cashing in on five of the seven top spots. Junior Calvin Schneider won, clearing 5-8. Senior AJ Kopplin and Charlie McCarty of Wausau Newman also cleared 5-8, but Schneider cleared it in less attempts to earn the win. Freshman Jaden Beske finished fifth and freshman Beau Howard placed sixth in the high jump as well.
The RHS boys' also had an impressive showing on the sprint events, finishing 2-3-4 in the 55-meter dash. Senior Josh Francisco led the way in second with a time of 7.03 and fellow senior Anthony Kowalski finished third at 7.05 and freshman Caleb Olcikas finished fourth at 7.19.
Rhinelander also had a solid showing in the 400, earning the top three spots and earning 6 of the top-8 positions. Kowalski led the way and was the only runner to crack a minute at 58.06 seconds. Junior Ethan Tienor (1:02.48) finished third, and junior Daniel Ritchie (1:04.64) rounded out the top-three. Schneider placed fifth, freshman Cole Worrall finished sixth, and junior Robert Masini recorded eighth.
The boys' also added a pair of runner-up finishes in the relays; the 4x160 meter and 4x400 meter. Junior Peyton Erikson, Olcikas, Francisco, and Kowalski were runners-up in the 4x160 with a time of 1:23.00. And Tienor, Tyler Olson, senior Isaiah Piosalan, and Schneider finished second in the 4x400 at 4:12.04.
Olcikas, Howard, Alex Huff, and Aden Bergman would also add a third place finish for the RHS boys' in the 4x320 with a time of 3:06.54.
Junior Drake Martin won the boys' shot put with a throw of 43-feet, 8.5 inches. While Connor Lund and Alex Olson both had top-five finishes in the shot put as well. Lund was fourth (39-5.0) and Olson finished fifth (39-2.5).
Martin placed third in the long jump and Erikson placed fifth in the event as well. Worrall also added a third place run in the 55-meter hurdles, clocking in at 9.51 seconds. Jaden Beske also finished fifth in the 1,600 meter run.
Rhinelander will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Northland Pines for a Great Northern Conference Indoor Invite that begins at 4:30PM.
