The Rhinelander High School track and field team battled in their second indoor meet of 2018 and finished in the middle of the pack against quality opponents. The Hodag boys finished third out of five teams, while the RHS girls placed fourth out of six teams at the Lakeland Indoor Invite.
Lakeland girls' and boys' each swept their divisions. The Thunderbird boys finished first with 136 points out of four teams, while the Thunderbird girls also placed first with 133 points. The RHS boys' in third place, were only 11 points away from Newman Catholic who were runner-up (82 points). Three Lakes boys rounded out the teams in fourth with 50 points.
Three Lake girls earned second (119.5) followed by Edgar in third (93.5). RHS girls finished fourth with 61 points and finished ahead of Newman Catholic (45) and Mercer (29).
Rhinelander's lone first place in the invitational went to junior AJ Kopplin who won the boys' high jump after clearing 5 feet, 10 inches. Kopplin won a three-way tie over Jacob Rexroade of Lakelland, who is the defending Great Northern Conference champion and Charlie McCarty of Wausau Newman. Calvin Schneider also scored points for RHS in the high jump and finished fifth after clearing 5-6.
Senior Alex Monk continued to stand out in the hurdles for the RHS boys' and added a pair of runner-up finishes in the 55 and 200-meter hurdles. Monk finished the 55 in 9.40 seconds to finish second, Joe Zeimetz of Newman Catholic won with a time of 8.95 seconds. In the 200, Monk again finished second with a time of 31.36 seconds, while Lakeland senior Maquian Johnson won with a time of 29.39.
In the boys' 55-meter dash, Rhinelander had a pair of sprinters finish 2-3; sophomore Nick Kriesel and junior Josh Francisco. Kriesel was only 0.01 seconds from finishing first with a time of 7.16 seconds. Lakeland senior Robert Burgess won with a time of 7.15 seconds. Francisco finished third with a time of 7.22 seconds.
RHS boys scored several points in the distance events on the day; freshmen Daniel Goldsworthy and Tristan Fuss went 2-3 in the 1,500-meters. University of Wisconsin-Madison recruit, Kav FitzPatrick of Lakeland won with a time of 4:28.82 seconds. Goldsworthy finished second at 5:44.11 and Fuss was right behind in third at 5:44.32 seconds. Goldsworthy also added a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meters, clocking in at 12:37.70.
Sophomores Drake Martin and Peyton Erikson also finished 2-3 in the boys' long jump. Lakeland senior Burgess won with a distance of 18-11.50. Martin finished runner-up at 18-10.25, only 1.25 inches away. Erikson jumped an 18-08.25 for third place.
Erikson also earned a fourth-place finish in the triple with a jump of 36-07.00. In the 55-hurdles freshman Jacques Tulowitzky added a fifth-place finish with a time of 10.35 seconds.
The RHS boys' 4x160 relay, 4x80, and 4x400 relay teams also scored points for the Hodags. Martin, Kriesel, Isaiah Piosalan, and Seth Stafford earned runner-up in the 4x160 relay, clocking in at 1:25.31. Three Lakes won the event with a time of 1:24.49.
While both the 4x80 and 4x400 relay teams earned third place finishes. Josef Lieder, Stafford, Hugh Wiese, and Piosalan made up the 4x80 team that finished at 45.60 seconds. And Erikson, Monk, Jack Kovac, and Schneider made up the 4x400 team, that finished with a time of 4:16.98.
Martin also finished third in the boys' shot put at 40-0 and freshman Alex Olson finished fourth in the shot put at 37-02.50.
On the girls' side of action, freshman Alison DeNamur earned fourth place in the 600, 1,500, and 3,000-meter events. DeNamur finished the 600 at 2:27.28, the 1,500 at 6:41.89, and the 3,000 at 14:48.55.
Senior Lexie Rick finished second in the girls' shot put with a throw of 32-01.25. Mercer sophomore Aubrey Schoeneman won the girls' shot put with a distance of 34-11.50.
Fellow senior Ellen Padgett placed third in the 300-meter dash and added a fourth-place finish in the 55-meter dash. Padgett clocked in at 49.79 seconds in the 300, and at 8.18 seconds in the 55. Sophomore teammate Isabella Anderson finished fifth in the 55 at 8.34 seconds.
Sophomore Morgan Johnson scored points for the RHS girls' in the 55 and 200 hurdles. Johnson finished third in the 55-hurdles with a time of 11.40 seconds, with sophomore teammate Aryssa Zasada finishing fifth at 11.54 seconds. And in the 200-hurdles, Johnson finished fourth at 37.75 seconds and Zasada placed sixth at 39.54 seconds.
The RHS girls' also added a pair of third place finishes in the 4x160 relay and the 800 sprint medley relays. Mattia Beske, Anderson, Samantha Siefert, and Delaney Chillemi clocked in at 1:44.61 in the 4x160. While Beske, Anderson, Padgett, and Claire Arbuckle finished the 800-sprint medley at 2:34.76.
The Rhinelander girls' also saw a minor injury to freshman Rebecca Lawrence in the girls’ high jump. Lawrence cleared 4-6 before scratching due to a calf injury.
The Hodags will compete in the Great Northern Conference Indoor meet at Northland Pines High School on Tuesday, April 3rd.
