The Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team blanked Medford at Raider Field Thursday night 4-0 to advance to 2-0 in the Great Northern Conference. The Hodags continue to utilize scoring opportunities off of corner kicks and had a pair of goals on the night to help cruise to a four-goal victory.
The last few seasons, Rhinelander girls' soccer has had their fair share of chances scoring on corners kicks, but this season they have already put three goals in from set pieces. Senior Jaden Olski, senior Brooke Mork, junior Izzy Haverkampf, and freshman McKenna Brown each recorded goals in the win.
Rhinelander controlled the tempo of the match and didn't take long to get on the board. In the eighth minute Olski took a corner for the Hodags' and Mork battled for position inside the six-yard box and won the scramble and found the back of the net to give RHS a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the scoring would not come until the second half, where the Hodags would tack on three more goals to put the game out of reach.
Just over two minutes into the second half, Rhinelander took advantage of another corner kick. This time senior Emma Hjelle took a corner in the 48th minute that sailed beyond the back post and Olski had a well-timed play and used her left foot to sneak a shot just inside the left post. It also gave RHS a 2-0 lead and momentum down the stretch.
Junior Madi Losch assisted Haverkampf on the Hodags' third goal in the 53rd minute. And Brown would chart her first varsity goal in the 77th minute after crashing a shot and putting home a rebound for Rhinelander's final goal of the night.
Rhinelander's defense and midfield was solid on the night and limited the Raider's opportunities. RHS held a 23-4 advantage on shots and 13-2 on shots on goal. Sophomore goalie Kahlie Arnerson earned the shutout win and added two saves.
The Hodags were originally scheduled to host Wausau Newman, but a conflict in schedules would have had the Cardinals short-handed. Therefore RHS will be on the road at Lakeland instead, with kick off slated for 6:00PM. Rhinelander will be on the road again Tuesday when they take on Antigo.
