In a tale of two halves, the Mosinee offense erupted in the third quarter to take down Rhinelander 21-20 at Veterans Park in Mosinee on Friday night.
The Hodags got off to a fast start scoring on their first possession on a Drake Martin touchdown run. Martin would score twice more to put Rhinelander ahead 20-7 at the half.In Rhinelander's first possession of the second half Mosinee's Michal Dul stripped the ball away from Hodag running back Jackson Labs. Mosinee would score on a pass from Trey Fitzgerald to Cyle Kowalski.
On Rhinelander's second possession of the second half senior running back Drake Martin injured his left ankle and the Hodag's offense sputtered. Rhinelander turned the ball over on downs holding on to a 20-14 lead.
On Mosinee's first play of the fourth quarter, Mosinee took a 21-20 lead on 41 yard pass from Fitzgerald to Kowalski. The difference in the game came down to a missed extra point by Rhinelander.
The loss will keep the Hodags from capturing a conference championship. Mosinee and Medford are both 4-0 and will play next Friday for the GNC title. At 2-2 Rhinelander is still looking for that third conference win to make the playoffs.
Rhinelander finished the contest with a total of 289 yards to Mosinee's 273.
Rhinelander will host the Merrill Bluejays on Friday October 11 at 7pm at Mike Webster Stadium.
