The Rhinelander High School cross country team competed at the Tomahawk Invitational on Saturday and both the girls and boys finished fifth on a cold and breezy morning. The Hodags had 10 top-20 finishes on the day in the JV and Varsity races. Despite the conditions, RHS finished in the middle of the pack and got a look at most of the Great Northern Conference competition as well as the venue of the WIAA sectional meet.
Edgewater Country Club is a relatively flat course, but the weather has prove to be the same the past several years at the Tomahawk Invite. The race was also pushed back by over an hour due to the cold temperatures. During the race there was also times of sleet and snow.
Tomahawk won the girls' and boys' varsity races on the day. The Hatchet boys finished with 41 points and Tomahawk junior Noah Buckwalter was first with a time of 17:00.8 in the 11-team invite. Lakeland was runner-up (75 points) followed by New London (119 points), Mosinee (125 points), and Rhinelander (134 points).
Sophomore Cal Laggis led the way for the Hodags, finishing 17th overall at 18:12.3. Junior Jacob Weddle was 25th (18:26.1), sophomore Jaden Beske 27th (18:36.9), and junior Daniel Goldsworthy finished 33rd (18:57.6). Junior David Gibbs (38th; 19:07.0), freshman Nathanael Gibbs (44th;19:30.9), and junior JC Adams (48th; 19:47.0) rounded out the varsity top-seven.
The Hatchets won with 33 points in the girls' division to edge Lakeland (36 points). Mosinee (101 points) and Chequamegon/Park Falls (138 points) finished ahead of the Hodags (139 points) out of nine teams. Lakeland senior Ashley Peterson won the girls' race at 19:17.3 and finished 23 seconds ahead of the field.
Junior Ali DeNamur paced the RHS girls and finished 17th with a time of 21:41.1 and fellow junior Abbey Henrichs was right behind in 19th at 21:48.8. Sophomore Aubrey Schiek (26th;22:20.7), sophomore Emma Germain (36th;22:42.8), sophomore Sage Flory (42nd; 23:04.9), junior Ella Schiek (44th;23:36.8), and sophomore Megan Brown (46th; 24:10.8) rounded out the varsity top-seven.
The RHS boys JV also finished in the middle of the pack and placed fourth out of seven teams and had two harriers make the top-20. Sophomore Jack DeNamur was 19th (19:49.6) and freshman Marcus O'Malley finished 20th (19:53.7). Freshman Cody Ruetz (28th; 20:40.8), freshman Travis White (31st; 21:02.2), and senior Levi Smith (33rd; 21:11.0) rounded out the top-five.
The RHS girls JV finished third out of five teams on the day and had their top-five runners all finish in the top-20. Senior Valerie Dalka led the way in 9th (23:37.2) and freshman Aubrianna Younker finished 10th (23:48.7). Freshman Kylinn Gechas (13th; 24:29.2), senior Lexi Morrison (19th; 25:03.4), and freshman Juliana Smith (20th; 25:10.2) rounded out the top-five for Rhinelander.
The Hodags will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Gartzke Flowage in Antigo for the Great Northern Conference Meet where they will face Tomahawk, Lakeland, Medford, Mosinee, Northland Pines, and Antigo. The meet is set to start at 10:00AM.
