The Rhinelander High School girls and boys cross country teams both had standout performances on Tuesday evening at the Northland Pines Invite in Eagle River. The RHS girls and guys both finished first overall in the five-team field in nearly perfect evening for running on the Eagles flat course which produced several fast times across the board.
Both teams cruised to convincing victories which included all seven varsity runners placing in the top 12 in the boys division. And all seven of the varsity girls placed in the top-17.
The Rhinelander boys finished with 21 points to win by 50 points over Butternut (71 points). Hurley (75 points) was third, Northland Pines (78 points) finished fourth, and Crandon (127 points) was fifth. The RHS girls won with 23 points and finished 52 points ahead of Northland Pines. Hurley girls were third, Crandon fourth, and Florence finished fifth.
Junior Jacob Weddle led a 1-2 finish for Rhinelander, followed by sophomore teammate Cal Laggis. The Hodag boys had five harriers in the top-10. Weddle (17:48.5) and Laggis (17:54.4) both cracked the 18-minute mark to lead the way. Weddle and Laggis were running third and fourth midway through the race and emerged to the front of the field with just under a mile left in the race.
Sophomore Jaden Beske had a solid run and finished fifth with a time of 18:35.5. Junior Daniel Goldsworthy wasn't far behind in eighth place and was the final RHS guy to crack 19-minutes at 18:59.2. Junior JC Adams was 10th (19:02.3), freshman Nathanael Gibbs finished 11th (19:02.9), and junior David Gibbs placed 12th (19:14.6).
Three Lakes freshman Kallie Volk (20:43.6) won the girls' race and was followed by her senior sister Kortnie in second (20:52.2). The RHS girls had three harriers in the top-8 and was led by junior Abbey Henrichs, who finished fourth at 22:09.0. Sophomore Audrey Scheik was right behind Henrihs in fifth (22:35.4) and sophomore Emma Germain charted a top-10 finish, placing eight at 22:54.7.
Sophomore Sage Flory finished 12th for Rhinelander at 23:28.9. Fellow sophomore Megan Brown was right behind Flory and placed 13th (23:31.9). And senior Valerie Dalka rounded out the RHS varsity in 17th place at 24.23.4).
Rhinelander will be back in action Saturday morning when the compete in an invite at Edgewater Country Club in Tomahawk which is looking to yield cold conditions with a chance of snow and rain in the mix. The GNC meet will be held on Saturday, October 19th in Antigo and RHS will than be back at Edgewater for sectionals later in the month.
