HORTONVILLE – Rhinelander Wrestling was represented by six grapplers over the weekend at the Badger State Games Wrestling Tournament in Hortonville. Five of the six placed in their respective brackets.
Two Hodags took first place. Connor Johnson (pictured) won the 9th-10th Grade 153-168 pound class, with three wins and two pins, including a pin of Sussex's Brandon Barsch in the finals. Alex Kurtz defeated Richland Center's Alex Peters twice with a pair of first period pins to take first in the 3rd-4th Grade 107-108 pound class.
Dante Steinmetz and Alec Modrow added third place finishes for Rhineladner. Steinmetz (3rd-4th Grade 55-58) lost to Nolan Kraus, a place winner at the WWF Kids Folkstyle Tournament this past March in the quarterfinals, but came back through the consolation bracket and took third place, beating Kraus 7-2 in the rematch for third.
Alec Modrow (5th-6th, 66-72) went 1-2 in his round robin, getting a 1-0 decision over Hortonville's Jacob Barnett for third.
A couple of seniors from this past year's RHS Wrestling team were on hand as well. Mike Cinfio went 1-2 in the 9th-12th 153-164 class and took fourth. Brenton Dotter went 1-2, losing 6-5 in the consolation semifinals, denying him a shot to wrestle for a top-four placement.
