MERRILL – 11-12 Girls All-Star softball team took two big wins in the Merrill tournament on Saturday defeating Weyauwega-Fremont 9-3 in game one and knocking off Merrill 7-5 in game two. Rain was falling when they arrived, but it cleared up quick and they took the field.

Kelsie Praul (pictured right) started off the day being the lead off batter for the Hodags. She ripped an in the park homerun to left field against WF in the first game. Mara Meyer stepped up as second batter and ripped a double.

Katie Kuester took the mound to start for the Hodags with 7 strikeouts, only 3 walks and only giving up 2 hits. Mara Meyer relieved Kuester in the 4th inning finishing the game with 4 strikeouts, 0 walks and only giving up 3 hits. Weyauwega-Fremont struck out only 5 batters for the game. Our girls were on.

Kelsie Praul went 2 for 2 with a homerun and a single.
Mara Meyer went 2 for 3 with a double and a single.
Lindsay Berrell (pictured left) went 1 for 1 with a single.
Sophie Schimdt went 1 for 2 with a single.
Emily Fortier went 1 for 3 with a single.

The girls never left the dugout. They played back to back.

In Game 2 against Merrill, the girls were playing hard, but Merrill put up a good fight. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the 4th, Hodags came back to score 3 and tie the Bluejays. Top of the 5th, Merrill scored 2 more, but we battled back with 4 more runs to take the victory 7-5.

Katie Kuester pitched the first 3 innings with 4 Ks, 4 walks and only giving up 2 hits. Mara Meyer pitched the final 2 innings closing the game with 3 stirkeouts, 1 walk and only gave up 3 hits.

Brianna Bozek (aka BB) went 2 for 2 with 2 singles.
Kelsie Prahl went 1 for 3 with a single.
Mara Meyer went (pictured below left) 1 for 2 with a single.

"This was the girls' first tournament of the summer and no one would've ever known," said Head Coach Jaime Roberts. "They came to play "real ball" and that they did. I am very proud of each and every one of them.”

“Kelsie Prahl played exceptional ball this weekend. As lead off batter, her first at bat of the first game was an in the park homerun and she remained consistent both at bat and on the field for the rest of the day," Roberts continued. "Merrill girls are tough, they always are, but our girls remained strong and battled back with a come from behind victory. One of very few victories against Merrill in Rhinelander's Little League History."

Unfortunately, the continued play for Sunday was rained out so we were unable to finish the tournament. But it was an amazing start to the All-Star season.
