RHS: *
Games, prom create scheduling issue for some

The good news, two Rhinelander High School sports teams will be in action today.

The bad news, at least for the players, is tonight is the RHS junior prom.

That makes for a scheduling dilemma for the members of the RHS softball team, which is playing a doubleheader in Neenah this morning, and the RHS boys’ tennis team, which concludes play in the Green Bay Preble Invite today.

While many of their classmates are dressing up and getting ready for the big night, the RHS softball and boys’ tennis teams will be 2 1/2 hours from home.

Today was originally scheduled to be an off day for the softball team, but last weekend’s event in Neenah was rescheduled for today. First pitch will be at 9:30 a.m.

Several players gave their opinion of playing on prom day. Not supprisingly, their reactions were mixed.

Senior Emily Fortier offered a very honest opinion on the schedule change.

“Well I’m excited and I am not,” Fortier explained. “It’s really nice to finally get our season going, and I’m glad we found a day to make it up that works for everyone, but I don’t know if all of our heads will be in it. Softball is partly a mental game and we need to make sure the excitement of prom doesn’t affect how we play.”

The hurlers just opened their season last night against Hurley in a game that concluded after deadline.

Fortier’s teammate, senior shortstop Brianna Bozek, had a different view.

“I’m fine with playing on prom,” Bozek said. “Softball is my favorite sport. I’d put softball over a dance any day. I am not even going to prom! But I’m sure the ones who are going would be more bothered by it.”

Meanwhile, the RHS boys’ tennis team will be prepping for its second day of play in Green Bay.
Tennis players Trent Wild and Sam O’Melia, both juniors, said time is largely the issue for them.

“I don’t like it too much,” Wild explained. “I just don’t like the fact that I’ll be tired and in a major rush to get home.”

O’Melia concurred.

“It is common for most teams to struggle in competition the day of homecoming or prom,” O’Melia said. “Their minds are in a different place. I won’t really be thinking about prom unless my last match takes a while, because of the worry I won’t get back in time for prom.”

Fortier said worrying about time and the potential to hurry through things is just a side effect of being involved in athletics.

“Obviously, I’d rather have the whole day to get ready instead of rushing, but that’s what happens when you commit to a sport,” she said.

One player might have more pressure on her than anyone else. Sophie Schmidt is the RHS softball team’s starting catcher and she’s also on this year’s prom court.

“I am not worried about getting back on time,” Schmidt said. “I trust that my coach will get us back in time and I don’t really take long to get ready! I’m really excited and pumped because I know (the day) is going to be very fun. Yes, there are some butterflies, but once everything starts happening you just have to go with it.”

At the end of the day, Fortier said she is happy just to get out and play.

“We only have had three outdoor practices before the tournament and one game,” she said. “That can give us somewhat of an idea of how we will play but I think our team has a lot of potential to do really well in the tournament and in this season in general. We’ve all been hitting very well and doing infield and outfield drills every day. We will find out (today).”
