Taylor Wissbroecker sets sights on state high jump podium

While a sixth-place state finish might be good enough for many athletes, Rhinelander High School’s Taylor Wissbroecker is hoping for more.
Following an extremely successful junior track season that saw her have success in the high jump and ultimately travel to state, Wissbroecker hopes to continue her growth throughout the year and place even higher to wrap up her high school career.
“I am hoping for a personal record this season,” Wissbroecker said. “Hopefully I can add another inch or two and make it down to state just like last year.”
Wissbroecker rode picture-perfect technique to the state competition in La Crosse, where she proceeded to clear 5 feet, 4 inches, good enough for sixth in the state and a new Rhinelander High School record.
Rhinelander High School head track coach Rod Olson said a slow approach will yield the highest results for Wissbroecker come June.
“I expect to see her get near that jump (5-4) by the beginning of the outdoor season,” Olson said. “I don’t think she will come in right away and do that, and we aren’t going to push it. We are not worrying about height right now, we are worrying about doing everything right so she can end up in that range. I think she can jump 5-6.”
Olson spoke highly of Wissbroecker’s technique, and said with the addition of speed and power, she might literally be able to soar to new heights.
“It was only the end of the year we were really getting speed and power in her jumps,” Olson said. “Most of the jumps that she won conference (with) or placed extremely high with at meets were just an average approach and mostly jump without any speed. Our goal is to get her flying in there more. She is very good at technique, we are just focusing on getting the power into it.”
Wissbroecker has been training to induce the power in her jumps, lifting weights up to four times a week. She also will be lengthening her approach to allow for a stronger build-up before taking off.
Wissbroecker has until mid-April before she will get her first crack at competing outside, and then ultimately May 21, which brings her to regionals held at Wausau East.
Because of realignment in Division 1, the Hodags will face tougher competition this postseason, going up against teams like Wisconsin Rapids and Stevens Point, compared to Lakeland and Rice Lake a year ago.
“She is going to have a tougher time at regionals, which is good for her,” Olson said. “She needs to be tested. I’m a little worried that the Great Northern Conference doesn’t have the competition to push her to new heights. She is good at battling other tough girls.”
Wissbroecker’s main conference rival last year — Tomahawk’s Kellan Flynn — graduated. Wissbroecker cleared 4-11 to win the GNC Outdoor last May on a windy day at Lakeland Union High School. Flynn cleared 4-10.
Olson also spoke about Wissbroecker’s ability to perform under pressure, something he first fully understood at the conclusion of last year’s season.
“There were 18,000 people watching at state last year, and she is jumping like it is her back yard,” Olson said. “Now that she has been there it is a whole other mental battle in that she wants to do better than last year. She can do it.”
If all goes according to plan, Wissbroecker could find herself jumping for state gold in La Crosse June 1.
“I’m very excited for new competition this year,” she said. “I am going to go out there and do my thing and hopefully everything will go as we planned.”
