Hodag Pride Leads USA TODAY Wisconsin Poll
By Student Writer - Connor Kuczmarski | Published: 02/27/2013

After finally being recognized for our mythical green monster, a little bit of Rhinelander pride has started to build in the USA TODAY mascot contest. The Hodags currently lead the state portion of the contest with 29,273 votes, or 50.678% overall.

"It feels good to finally be recognized for how unique our mascot is," junior Bryce Bilogan said. "I am proud to be a Hodag and for us to not only be in the poll but leading it feels pretty sweet."

Bilogan, a sectional qualifying wrestler, represents the Hodags on the football field as well.

Since Feb. 25 the Hodags have been competing against four other Wisconsin mascots for the top spot in the state. The Mellen Granite Diggers are currently in second place with 27.58% of the vote, followed by the Ashland Oredockers (12.29%), the Kimberly Papermakers (5.774%), and finally the Kaukana Galloping Ghosts (3.672%).

Initially 255 mascots from around the country were selected, or five per state. Following the final state polls the 51 winners will go on to the second round, where they will be divided up into six regions. Voting for the regional round begins March 6 and is set to end March 14.

The winners of the regional round will advance to the national final spanning Marh 15-25, where they will compete for the right to be named the best high school sports mascot in America.

The article explaining the contest at usatodayhss.com said they want to find the best high school mascot in the country, "from A (the Auks in Delaware) to Z (the Zizzers in Missouri)."

If the Hodag takes the top spot, the school district's athletic department will be rewarded greatly. The final winner of the contest will receive $2,000 dollars. Second place goes home with $1,000, third ($500), fourth ($250), and fifth ($100).

Luckily for the School District of Rhinelander, the Hodag faithful are coming out in large numbers. The thought of taking home a national award has much of the Rhinelander High School student body fired up.

"It just is awesome to think about as a student," junior Connor Funk said. "For us to be in the top five in the state is awesome to begin with, but thinking about going farther than that is even better. If we can make it to the top six mascots in the country, let alone win it all, that would be awesome. It would be good for our school to get that sort of notoriety."

Students are regularly seen pulling for their beloved mythical beast in study halls and on mobile devices throughout the day. With the help of an entire community and admiring fans from across the state, the prospects of a regional round appearance looks good for the Hodags.

"I think the Hodag is definitely the most unique mascot out there," senior Chloe Shepard explained. "Being in a town with such school spirit, I would be shocked if the Hodag didn't win."
