RHS: Girls Basketball
Lady Hodags Blast Hatchets
By Student Writer - Connor Kuczmarski | Published: 02/15/2013

What a difference a few days can make. Just two short days ago the Rhinelander High School girls' basketball team was in the midst of a ten game skid, but following a rousing 37-32 victory over the Lakeland Thunderbirds in the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium, their momentum carried over to Thursday night.

The Hodags welcomed the Tomahawk Hatchets, the Hodags only previous win prior to Lakeland, to their home court and proceeded to take the Hatchets apart at the seams. The girls' utilized some offensive firepower from Mara Meyer as well as stifling defense to lead them to a victory over Tomahawk 51-31.

Mara Meyer led both teams in scoring with 21 points, knocking down seven three point attempts throughout the contest. Girls' basketball coach Mark Jacobson spoke specifically about Meyer and his point guard, who had a significant offensive presence within the contest.

"Mara Meyer had 21 points on seven three pointers, she has been shooting the ball exceptionally well," Jacobson explained. "Sydnei Smith gave us 13 on the night. She ran the points pretty well. When you distribute the ball and shoot well that can lead to victory. I have to say we are improving and things are starting to take shape."

Jacobson continued, speaking about with a continuously improving post presence, the offense could become truly dynamic.

"If we can get some scoring down low, who knows (what we could accomplish)," Jacobson said.

The Hodags came out of the gate well defensively, utilizing turnovers and one and done Tomahawk offensive possessions to jump start their impressive offensive performance. The Hodags offense pounded Tomahawk for 18 first quarter points, while their defense allowed just seven.

The Hodags continued to pour it on offensively, outscoring the Hatchets 12-8 and 16-6 in the second and third quarters respectively. The Lady Hodags were outgunned 10-5 in the final quarter, but much of the action occurred when the contest was already out of reach.

Smith and the Hodags also played outstanding defense against Tomahawk's leading scorer Jessie Harmon, who was coming off a 31 point performance in her previous outing. Smith held Harmon to just 4 points on the night, consistently finding ways to limit her offensive opportunities.

"We started off well defensively," Jacobson said. "Then we got a little complacent. I let the girls know that is unacceptable and that we need to keep the pressure on. We can't have any let downs, and they pretty much did what I asked them to."

Meyer led the Hodags with 21, followed by Smith who had 13.

Looking ahead the Hodags (3-15, 3-8 GNC) take on Northland Pines on Friday.

"We are going to have to bring our A game, especially defensively," Jacobson said. "We have to play the game and the girls have a bit of confidence under their belts."
