Hodags Handle Indians

The Rhinelander High School boys' basketball team did their job on Friday night, taking care of the revenge seeking Mosinee Indians by a final tally of 63-53.
While the game was much closer than the team's first encounter, a 64-35 win for the Hodags over a month ago, the Rhinelander team still managed to pull off a double digit victory.
"The boys came out good tonight," RHS boys' basketball coach Derek Lemmens said. "Mosinee hung around and made some tough shots, but our guys showed good composure."
The Hodags were extremely productive on offense throughout the night, with the guards consistently finding passing lanes to drive the ball down low. Once there, the Hodag bigs did their job, outmuscling an undersized Mosinee post the duration of the game.
"Brett Matthews had a very good game for us scoring 17," Lemmens said. "Mitch and Shane had 16 each, and it is clear that we are doing well getting the ball inside. I felt like our guards distributed the ball very well tonight."
The Hodags scored 26 in the first half, before revamping to add 37 points in the second.
"We missed some clean looks on the night," Lemmens stated. "But it is good we were getting those looks. As the game went on we slowly pulled away. We got a little sloppy and the lead dropped back down to ten. Luckily the guys responded and we hung on."
Brad Kenote saw his first significant minutes since a shoulder injury benched him back in December. Coach Lemmens spoke positively about the benefits of having one of his best defenders and playmakers back in the game.
"Brad got good minutes (in the game)," Lemmens said. "It is going to be good to get him back in the flow of things."
Brett Mathews led the game in scoring with 17 points, followed closely by Mitch Reinthaler and Shane White who had 16 points apiece for the Hodags.
Looking forward, Coach Lemmens is focusing on continuing to refine his teams game for a late postseason run.
"We just have to keep getting ready for the playoffs," Lemmens said simply. "We need to keep cleaning stuff up and getting better and better."
The Hodags (15-2, 8-1 GNC) can clinch at least a share of the Great Northern Conference crown with a win over Lakeland on Tuesday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
"It is a big one," Lemmens said. "If we get this game, we have a share of the conference. Right from the start we have to seal the deal. It is a rival game, a home game, and there is going to be a great atmosphere. We just have to respond."
Box Score: Mosinee vs. Rhinelander Friday, Feb. 8 Mosinee--53 Rhinelander 12 15 19 17--63 Rhinelander(63): Matthews 17, Reithaler 16, White 16, Volkmann 6, Bowman 2, Kenote 6 Thee Pointers: Rhinelander 5 (Matthews, Reinthaler 2, White, Volkmann)
