Hodags Cool Off Late

Despite an extremely hot start for the Rhinelander High School girls' basketball team, the Hodags couldn't fend off the Mosinee Indians late in the contest. The Hodags led 26-24 at the break, but lost their momentum in the second half and slowed to a tough 50-38 loss.

"We came out playing well," RHS girls' basketball coach Mark Jacobson said. "We carried it right until the end of the second quarter and we had a let down and let Mosinee back in."

The Hodags opened up in the first half offensively, knocking down shots and consistently finding holes in the Mosinee defense. The Hodags sunk four 3 point shots in the first half, two by Sydnei Smith, to solidify their hot start. The momentum was clearly in the Hodags favor until midway through the second frame, when fouls began to become a factor.

Molly Willging, known for her tenacity and defense on the court, was called for her third personal foul midway through the second. In her absence the Indians began to get traction, and began to close the gap entering the halfway break.

"Fouls were definitely a factor for us," Jacobson explained. "Molly is out there playing defense and going after it. We have to have someone go after it. Sometimes that is the price you pay."

As the Hodags hot start began to cool, the Indians began to pull away. The Hodags scored just six points in the third and fourth quarters apiece, compared to Mosinee's 12 and 14.

"We started strong and had a nice flow going," Jacobson said. "They chiseled away at our lead. It was a slug fest and they ended up out slugging us in the end."

Sydnei Smith led all scorers with 12 points, followed by Brianna Gilbert who had eight. Mosinee's Macee Beste paced the Indians with 10 points.

Perhaps the most glaring statistic from the night is the foul difference between the two teams. The Hodags were called for 18 team fouls spanning the contest, compared to just nine committed by the Indians. Mosinee scored 20 points from the charity stripe in the game.

Coach Jacobson continued, reflecting on the night.

"I thought our effort was good. We are just going to keep pushing on. It is all we can do."

Rhinelander is now 1-15 and 1-8 in the GNC, and welcome the Lakeland Thunderbirds to the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium for the second half of a doubleheader on Tuesday.
