Despite a constantly improving offensive attack, the Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team couldn’t deny a powerful Marshfield team on Tuesday night. The Lady Hodags trailed by 21 at halftime and fell by a score of 77-45 at the Marshfield High School Fieldhouse.
“We came out flat,” RHS girls’ basketball coach Mark Jacobson said. “They came out on fire. Simply put, we were outplayed on all levels.”
The Hodags (1-14, 1-7 Great Northern) came out of the gate slow, only scoring five points to Marshfield’s 18 in the opening frame. Rhinelander was much more productive in the second quarter scoring 14, but the Tigers remained hot, knocking down jumper after jumper. Marshfield (10-8, 3-6 Wisconsin Valley) extended its lead to 40-19 at halftime.
Rhinelander scored 17 in the third quarter, led by Mara Meyer who had eight in the frame. Unfortunately for the Hodags they simply couldn’t keep pace with an explosive Tigers’ team. Caitlin Michaelis, daughter of Marshfield head coach Heidi Michaelis, scored 11 of her game-high 35 points in the third to help seal the victory.
“Marshfield is a very good team,” Jacobson stated. “They are extremely young as well. They are going to be a nightmare to contend with in the future as well as the rest of this season. They have some scary-good shooters.”
Meyer led the Hodags in scoring with 11. Junior point guard Sydnei Smith and sophomore posts Brianna Gilbert scored eight apiece.
“Mara led with 11 and Syd and Brianna had eight,” Jacobson said. “Molly Willging played well for us defensively tonight.”
Jacobson said he respected the talent necessary for Marshfield, and Michaelis in particular, to accomplish such a stat line.
“The coach’s daughter (Michaelis) was 9-of-11 on three point shots,” Jacobson explained. “Many of those were contested shots. I think that is the best pure shooting performance I’ve ever been around in my coaching career.”
Rhinelander hosts the Mosinee Indians on Friday in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
