ANTIGO — Freshman forward Katie Detert netted two goals and an assist to help the Northern Edge girls hockey team pull away from Medford 3-1 Monday night at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building.
The Edge followed up a 62-shot performance Friday at Lakeland by hammering 50 shots on Raiders senior goalie Tori Walsh.
“It’s a big positive. We’re doing well in the offensive zone and creating scoring chances,” Northern Edge co-coach Nick English said.
Detert expanded her team-leading points total to 36 by picking up her 24th goal and 12th assist on the year. Both scores came in a decisive third period that began in a 1-1 tie.
Just before the second intermission, Detert had been stopped by Walsh on a breakaway scoring chance.
“Katie was pretty upset between the second and third periods when she missed that breakaway, but she comes out and scores what comes out to be the game-winning goal and the insurance goal. You can’t give up,” English said.

Northern Edge improved to 13-6-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the Great Northern Conference. Medford dropped to 4-15-1, 2-9-1.
The next-to-last game before the postseason served as a focusing point for the Edge.
“We talked about it, 1-1 going into the third, I still had confidence in us to win the game, but I wanted us to start thinking, ‘we only have four more periods before the playoffs,’” English said.
The game started fairly quietly. Neither team scored in the first period despite the Edge outshooting Medford 19-3.
In the second, a wraparound shot attempt from Detert turned into a perfect pass to sophomore defenseman Gabbe Millot. She put home a one-timer for a 1-0 Edge lead just more than four minutes into the session.
Three minutes later, freshman forward Amanda Bauer scored Medford’s only goal on a broken play.
After two periods, 34 shots on goal had yielded just one goal for the Edge.
“The girls, you can see, they got frustrated. You just have to tell them they can’t do anything differently. Keep doing what you’re doing,” English said.
Detert responded seven and a half minutes into the third, scoring on the run with assists from senior Sierra Vinger and sophomore Lauren Smith. That same trio would ice the game with the third goal with three minutes left.
Despite seven penalties in the game, including five in the third period, all four goals were scored at even strength.
The Edge, the only GNC team to beat Northland Pines this year, will host the Eagles Friday in what promises to be a fierce battle of wills.
“It’s going to be intense. Especially stemming from the first time we played them, going up to their barn and beating them 3-1,” English said. “They’re going to be ready to just get after us. We’re excited.”
