Despite once again restricting one of their stars, the Rhinelander High School gymnastics had an extremely positive day at the Escanaba Invitational. The Hodags placed in every event and finished with a team score of 122.025, good enough for second overall.
Megan Thornton again showcased her well rounded skill set, finishing fifth in the all around with a score of 31.70. She placed fourth on the floor with a 8.45, and notched a pair of fifth place finishes on the beam (8.4) and vault (8.25).
"Megan Thornton had another amazing day," Rhinelander gymnastics head coach Jen Pooch explained. "She's just been so solid and consistent. As a coach that is what you hope for. She's a great leader in the gym and her hard work has really been showing through in her competitions as well. (I am) very proud of her."
Other Hodag standouts included Sara Krueger, Stephanie Allen, and Elle Spiegelhoff.
Krueger dazzled with a first place finish on the floor (8.9), followed closely by Allen who finished in third (8.5). Spiegelhoff was restricted to just the bars and beam following a nasty ankle sprain, but made the most of her limited action. She took second place on the uneven bars with a score of 8.1.
Spiegelhoff is expected to compete in all events at a conference triangular Monday in Rhinelander.
"Sara had a great floor day," Pooch said. "She is a very natural performer and is just super clean and executes well. She leaves very little room for deduction and it really showed in her floor routine. Stephanie also had a very nice floor routine. She's been working hard on staying clean and not giving away deductions on little things like pointed toes and connections. She had a great routine. Elle continues to be strong on the bars. She is a great bar worker and does her routine with ease."
Coach Pooch was excited about what she say from her girls and explained what she wants to see improved heading into the aforementioned triangular.
"The team as a whole really did well," she said. "We are peaking when we need to be and for tomorrow we are just focusing on executing and hitting our skills and routines. We would like to see our team score improve as well."
The Hodags welcome Chequamegon and Lakeland to the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium for senior night on Monday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
Team scores: Antigo- 133.75 Rhinelander- 122.025 Marquette- 120.85 Negaunee- 115.30 Escanaba- 112.625
