Things looked grim for the Northern Edge through much of their contest against Lakeland on Friday night. The Thunderbirds led 1-0 throughout most of the game, before the Edge answered in the waning minutes of the third period. The Rhinelander/Antigo/Three Lakes team then went on to emerge victorious following the overtime period.
"It was a good game," said Northern Edge co-coach Nick English. "We weren't playing nearly as good as we could have been. It is an ugly win, but a win at that."
The Thunderbirds took a lead with 5:42 remaining in the second period when Cali Hunter caught a pass from Jaci Duranso and proceeded to knock it past Edge goalie Sophie Schmidt. This lead was held throughout the contest as a combination of missed opportunities and impressive goaltending by Lakeland kept the Edge off the scoreboard until the 4:59 mark of the last frame. Freshman Katie Detert got control of the puck and fired it into the goal to knot the game up at 1-1 with little time remaining.
Both teams managed to stymie the oppositions offensive efforts for the remainder of the game, bringing us to a do or die overtime period. The two conference foes battled for positioning back and forth throughout the OT period, before the puck once again found itself at the skates of Katie Detert. She was 2-2 on the night, as she knocked the goal in with just 26.8 seconds remaining on the clock to lead her team to victory.
Coach English was happy with the outcome and spoke positively about the contest overall.
"We came out and battled and soon found ourselves down 1-0," said English. "We tied it with about 5 minutes left on the clock. We outshot them heavily 62-21. You have to credit their goaltender in a game like this, as she made some big heads up saves for them. We were missing a couple skaters tonight, but overall it was a good conference win."
Those aforementioned skaters include Sierra Vinger, Jenni Carlson, Cassie Hoger, and backup goalie Makiya Mexico. Sophie Schmidt made 20 saves in the win.
When speaking about the athlete that knocked in both Edge goals on the night, Coach English spoke about her positive showing in the game.
"Katie Detert played very well," said English. "She had both goals for us and the last goal came on a 5 on 3 power play with seconds left on the clock. Simply put if we don't score there we don't deserve to win. We had 13 shots in the overtime period and we had to bury at least one of them."
Addressing other standout athletes, Coach English spoke highly of both his goalie and his team's defense on the evening.
"Sophie Schmidt played well tonight. She always plays well and she continues to play good. She had big saves throughout the night and a couple in overtime as well. Defensively we played well, we had some great opportunities on offense with the puck but their goalie played extremely well tonight. You have to give credit to her."
Following such a close contest Coach English is focusing on continuing to improve and refine the little things, all while preparing his team for postseason hockey.
"We just need to keep getting better," explained English. "We need to fine tune and if we that we will play alright. We have Medford on Monday before facing Northland Pines to wrap up the conference schedule. We have two big games remaining and we are continuing to prepare."
The Northern Edge (12-6-1, 8-3-1 Great Northern) hosts Medford in Antigo Monday.
