RHINELANDER – As part of a drive to get RHS students stronger and enthusiastic about weightlifting, over forty athletes gave their maximum effort in the weight room before the Holiday break.
Physical education and football coach Jim Moore was pleased with the results, saying, “The weight room had an energy that we’ve not had before. These young people are on a mission to improve to help bring pride back to Hodag Athletics.”
Junior Dan Kellen agrees. “Having everyone up in the weight room was something new. It’s a great place to start, and hopefully we can get this many guys throughout the summer as well,” said Kellen.
A “max” is the top weight that an athlete can lift and is figured using a formula that considers how many repetitions the lifter does with a given weight.
Students maxed in four core lifts – the power clean, parallel squat, dead lift and bench press – at the end of the fall sports season and were recently tested again. More than one hundred student personal records were broken among these core exercises.
Some of the greatest improvements came in the parallel squat. The top five squatters were Austin Busche with 385 pounds, Terry Apfel - 370, Joey Mixis - 345, Micah Baumgartner - 345 and Kyle Comer - 325.
Notable improvements from previous max attempts in the squat were achieved by Comer who improved 95 pounds, Micah Baumgartner - 90, Darren McGuire - 70, and Seth Mathews – 55.
Lastly, the following improved 25 pounds to 45 pounds in the squat: Dan Kellen, Andrew Roberts, Jeff Forsyth, Tyler Bergman, Nate Schmidt, Mitch Ives, Sam McKenzie, Tony Schlueter, Levi Haskins, Zach Reinhart, John Michniak, and Alec Baumgartner.
In power cleaning max week saw three athletes lifting over 200 pounds: Nick Johnson with 240, Drew Roberts - 230 and Joey Mixis - 215. Greatest improvements in the power clean went to Mitch Ives who went up 45 pounds to 185, Comer plus 45 to 190, Haskins plus 40 to 145, Ben Eversman plus 40 to 165, Matt Quade plus 35 to 150, Schlueter plus 35 to 135, Mark Senoraske plus 30 to 155, Alec Baumgartner plus 30 to 140 and Tom Raith plus 30 to 155.
As a reward for these students meeting weight goals, incentive shirts are awarded for attaining various weight levels for the power clean and parallel squat. These lifts are especially positive in creating power and speed. During this round of max attempts, thirty incentive shirts in the power clean and parallel squat were earned.
“The 40+ athletes that are training, recording workouts and maxing are giving a total effort to our cause to make a difference at RHS athletics. Go Hodags!,” said Moore.
The next max dates are slated for the week of March 8.
