RHINELANDER - The following is the report from Little League Softball's opening day this past Saturday at Pioneer Park...

11-12 Little League Girls Softball
Opening Day, May 10th, 2008

Game One: Black vs. Gray 14-7 Black
Game Two: Gray vs. Green 8-6 Green

The 11-12 Girls Softball division started off with an exciting game with the Black team vs. the Gray team. For the Black team, Katie Kuester pitched an amazing 6 innings taking home the win 14-7. She struck out 9.

Hitting was all there for the Black team getting 10 hits with 14 runs scored. Sophie Schmidt went 3 for 3 for the game with an amazing sacrifice bunt that she legged out for a hit. "We are very proud of all the girls," said Head Coach Jaime Roberts of the Black team. "They worked very hard to prepare in the short amount of time that the weather has allowed us."

Pitching the first 3 innings for the Gray team, Mara Meyer (pictured right) was spot on with 2 strikeouts and only 3 walks. Emily Fortier finished out the final 2 innings with 3 strikeouts and no walks. Katie Rogalla hit an amazing solo in the park home run in the 5th inning. Head Coach Dan Meyer said there were many defensive errors, but it was a good game.

The Gray team had more success in game two with Mara Meyer pitching a complete 6 innings with 3 strike outs taking the win 8-6 over the Green team.

Starting pitcher for the Green team, Kelsi Prahl hurled for 3 innings and had 1 strike out. Sadie Spencer finished out the last 2 innings with 2 strikeouts. Head Coach Bob Aschenbrenner said that they had a chance, but had a few errors on the field. Overall it was an exciting game.

     9-10 Little League Girls Softball
Opening Day May 10th 2008

It was an exciting day for the 9-10 year old division. We started the year with live pitching. In the first game, 9 year old Katie Detert showed us her power from the mound against the Gray team with. For the Gray team, Dominique Knauf (pictured left) took command of the mound. No stats were kept for these games due to the overwhelming numbers on the teams. Each team was sitting with 16 to 17 players, so we made sure everyone got at least one at bat.

In the second game, Rachel Blomdahl hit the hill with amazing power for the Black team. For the Green team, 9-year-old McKayla Madden made her pitching debut. In the second inning, 9-year-old Ivy Packard also made her pitching debut for the Black team and Jenna Cogar finished out the game for the Green team.

Due to the overwhelming numbers on each of the three teams (late signups), Head Coaches MJ Laggis, Terri Detert and Kristi Mullikin had a meeting and have formed a fourth team. Head Coach Mark Jacobson will be taking the new team.

Under these circumstances, all 9-10 games are cancelled for this week to give the 4th team time to practice together. A new schedule will be issued to everyone this week and games will resume on Monday, May 19th.

All four teams will now have 13 players. All head coaches agree that it will be better for the girls.

Little League Girls Softball
Opening Day, May 10th, 2008

7-8 year old division kicked off at 8am with the pitching machine cranked to 38mph. Fielding was great for both the Gray and the Green teams. Hitting was fantastic. Stats not kept this young, but exciting non-the less for these peewee players.
