Hodags Swimmers Score Ten Wins in Tomahawk Rout

TOMAHAWK – RHS Boys’ Swimming coach Amber Stengl admitted to changing her lineup a bit as the Rhinelander Hodags traveled to Tomahawk Tuesday night. Her combinations worked well, as the Hodags won 10 of the 11 events en route to a 118-45 victory over the Hatchets.
Part of mixing things up included, at least for one night, breaking up the team of Ben Lonsdorf, Mark Ritchie, Andy Schoff and Ben Schrage in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. It didn’t matter as the Hodags still won both events with ease.
“We had a lot of swimmers in different events, just trying to see what they could do,” Stengl said following the event.
That meant opportunities for several different swimmers, including senior Jason Zunk and junior Andy Baker, who both scored wins for the Hodags. Zunk was best in the 100-yard butterfly. Baker picked up a win in the 50-yard free style.
Lonsdorf, Ritchie, Schoff and Schrage did not compete together in their normal relay events, swimming in the 200 free relay instead. The result was a win in a blazing time of 1:36.97.
Schoff picked up two individual wins, while Lonsdorf, Ritchie and Schrage each had one individual win.
Schrage and Lonsdorf would have picked up a win in the 200-yard medley relay with teammates Zunk and Baker, but the team was disqualified.
Instead the win went to the Hodag team consisting of sophomore Adam Schneider, freshman Alex Jones, freshman Joel McReynolds and junior Will Schneider.
Ritchie, Baker, Adam Schneider and Schoff took the win in the 400-yard free relay.
“I was very pleased with how well everyone swam,” said Stengl.
Rhinelander is 2-0 in Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meets, and 2-1 overall in duals. The Hodags will now enter a their holiday break and will return to official competition Friday, January 5 in the Ashwaubenon Invitational.
“Our times are looking good and it will be interesting to see how we perform after some tough training over the holiday break.”
Part of that training will include a fun event, the RHS Alumni Swim Meet, which will be held this Saturday.
