The Rhinelander Post 7 Rebels advanced to 8-0 on the season after their third convincing win against Tomahawk this summer. The Rebels took advantage of six Cub errors and earned a 10-0 Great Northern Legion game Wednesday at Stafford Field.
Rhinelander would rally for four runs in the first innings with the aid of four errors. Brad Comer reached second to drive in Jacob DeMeyer on a ball that was misplayed in right center with two outs. The errors continued for Tomahawk when Nick Arnott dropped a pop up to second allowing Brad Quade to get on base.
With runners on the corners, Quade took off to try and steal second, but got into a rundown, while Comer made his way home. The Cubs fired home to try and get Comer, but the throw was off the mark, allowing the first run in. Catcher Jake Ruid then tried to get Quade out stealing third, but again the throw sailed into left field, allowing another run in.
From there, Rhinelander had three straight walks from Bryce Schickert, Liam Stevens, and Walker Hartman to load the bases. This forced Tomahawk to change pitchers after only 2/3 of an inning. Elijah Scheffler was sent to the mound, but the Rebels were able to score one more run before Stevens was picked off at second base to give Rhinelander a 4-0 lead.
Payton Johnson started the second off with a single to right center. Martin Hoger followed with an RBI single to left. DeMeyer singled to center, but Comer and Quade each flew out to end the threat. Rhinelander added one more run to their early lead.
The bats slowed down for the Rebels until the fifth and once again they rallied with two outs. Quade reached on error, DeMeyer was hit by a pitch and Hartman drove in Quade on a single to left to put Rhinelander up 6-0.
Tomahawk would once again change pitchers this time they turned to Jacob Matti in the sixth frame. But the Cubs and Matti would not record a single out before Rhinelander plated four more runs to win via the 10-run mercy rule.
Josh Randolph started with a single to left, Hoger walked, and DeMeyer was hit by another pitch to load the bases. Comer cleared the bases on a 3- RBI double. And after a late throw home to try and get DeMeyer and an overthrow to second, allowed Comer to steal third and home to clench the game-winning run.
On the night, Rhinelander used three pitchers to earn the shut-out win and only gave up four hits in the win. DeMeyer struck out five and gave up one hit over three innings of work. Stevens followed and pitched the next two innings in relief and earned the win with one strikeout and he gave up one hit. Hoger pitched the sixth to round out the game.
The Rebels travel to Prentice/Phillips for a non-conference game on Friday night and will return home to Stafford Field to face Northwoods. The Wisconsin AA District 2 Legion Regional tournament will be held in Rhinelander July 19-22 which will include Antigo, Northwoods, and Shawano.
