The Rhinelander High School track team kicked off their 2018 indoor season on Thursday and the boys' and girls' each finish 3rd in a quadrangular meet in Wisconsin Rapids. The Hodags won several events on the evening and the young squad showed they are ready to battle this season.
Wisconsin Rapids won both the girls' and boys' divisions. The boys' finished with 78 points while the girls' charted 71 points. Reedsburg earned runner-up in both the girls' and boys' fields. While the RHS boys' in third had 34 points, and the girls' also in third finished with 28 points to edge out John Edwards in fourth.
Two of the wins were on the girls' side of action, including freshman Rebecca Lawrence's varsity debut, where she won the high jump clearing 4 feet, 10 inches. Sophomore Aryssa Zasada also won the 50-meter hurdles for the lady Hodags. Senior Lexie Rick won the shot put with a distance of 31 feet, 9 inches and was the lone girl to break 30 feet on the night.
On the boys' side, sophomore Daniel Ritchie earned the lone individual win for the RHS boys', taking the 400-meter. Ritchie was also the only boy in the 400 to break the minute mark, finishing at 58.96 seconds. The Hodag boys' relays also had an impressive first showing, as they won the 4x133 (4 laps) and 4x400 and finished second in the 4x200 relay.
The team of Josh Francisco, AJ Kopplin, Nick Kriesel, and Drake Martin finished first in the 4x133 with a time of 1 minute, 9.40 seconds to edge Wisconsin Rapids by 0.40 seconds. While the boys' 4x400 team of senior Alex Monk, Anthony Kowalski, Ritchie, and Calvin Schneider finished first with a time of 4:13.49 to earn over a three-second win against Reedsburg.
While the team of Martin, Seth Stafford, Kriesel, and Isaiah Piosalan were runner-up in the boys' 4x200, clocking in with a time of 1:52.86. Reedsburg relay won the 4x200, edging Rhinelander by only 0.63 seconds.
Also earning a second place-finish behind teammate Zasada was Morgan Johnson in the girls' 50-meter hurdles. Johnson was only 0.18 seconds behind Zasada for RHS to earn the 1-2 finish. Freshman Delany Chillemi also finished fifth in the 50-meter hurdles.
In the girls' 50-meter dash, senior Ellen Padgett led Rhinelander and clocking in at 7.37 seconds, finishing in third place. While her teammate Isabelle Anderson recorded fifth place. Abigale Gechas finished in fifth in the 800-meters.
While the RHS girls' 4x200 relay team of Mattia Beske, Anderson, Samantha Siefert, and Lawrence came in fourth place with a time of 2:11.31. And Beske, Siefert, Anderson, and Padgett also paired up in the 4x133 and finished fifth at 1:26.31.
In the boys' field events, they scored a number of top-five finishes as well. Kopplin and Schneider each cleared 5-8 on the high jump and recorded a third and fourth. While Martin was able to crack 40 feet on the shot put with a throw of 41-7 ¾ for fifth place.
In the 50-meter dash, Kriesel added a third-place finish after clocking in at 6.66 seconds. Monk recorded fourth in the 50-meter hurdles with a time of 8.87 seconds. While freshman Tristan Fuss came in fifth place in the 800 with a time of 2:36.55.
It was a great opportunity for the RHS boys' and girls' track team to see where they stack up before they kick off their outdoor portion of their season under new head coach Aaron Kraemer. The Hodags will be back in action and will take part in the Lakeland Indoor Invite on Tuesday evening.
