The Rhinelander High School hockey team suffered their fifth straight loss this season after a strong 7-0 start. The Hodags fell 6-1 to Kingsford, Michigan on Saturday night at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
Kingsford would outshoot Rhinelander 39-12 on the night and would score two goals each period to earn the five-goal victory. The Hodags tallied their only goal of the second in the second period despite being outshot 18-2 in the period. RHS held a 7-6 edge on shots in the final period, but would unable to capitalize.
Daunte Fortner of the Flivvers would finish the game with a hat trick while David Brule added two goals in the win and Kingsford advanced to 7-3 on the season.
Brule would put Kingsford on the board at 8:35 in the first on a short-handed goal assisted by Eamonn Weed. The Flivvers had several other first-period chances including a few breakaways, but couldn’t convert again until exactly four minutes remaining in the period. Nick Saari scored the final goal of the period to put Kingsford up 4-0.
Then in the second, the Flivvers would get Forntner's first goal of the night at the 3:18 mark. Brule would tally his second just over 10 minutes later to put Kingsford up 4-0.
The Hodags would finally break up the Flivvers scoring and would connect on their only goal of the night at 15:51 in the second. Junior Brandon Kolasa would convert on a powerplay goal and was assisted by fellow junior Hunter Hicks and senior Cole Spaulding.
Rhinelander would outshoot Kingsford 7-6 in the final period, but that did not stop the Flivvers offense. Fortner scored his second goal of the night only 2:32 into the third. And Fortner would complete his hat-trick at 11:59 on a powerplay goal, as Kingsford went on to win 6-1.
Hodag goalie Seth Stafford finished the night and would have 33 saves in the loss. Rhinelander would drop their fifth straight contest of the 2017-2018 season.
Rhinelander will look to turn the tables and stop their losing streak on Thursday when they host Mosinee. The first game against the Indians in the beginning of December, RHS earned a 6-3 road win.
