The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team compete in the 14-team Antigo Invite on Saturday, and won the White Division bracket which consisted of seven of the teams with 117.825 points. The invite also featured all eight teams that will be competing at the WIAA Division 2 sectionals also held in Antigo, where the top two teams will earn a trip to state, along with the all-around and top five gymnasts in each event.
Washburn sophomore Lakyn Sonday won the all-around title in the white division after winning all four events with a total score of 34.125. While Rhinelander had the next spots for the all-around.
Senior Stephanie Kuester was runner-up at 31.9 points. While junior teammates Raven Sturtevant wasn’t far behind for third with a score of 31.7 points. Kuester finished second on the vault at 8.275 as well as the uneven bars at 7.725 and she tied for second on the floor exercise at 8.325.
While Sturtevant was on the podium for all four events. She tied with Kuester for second on the floor while also adding a runner-up on the balance beam at 7.925. Sturtevant finished third on the uneven bars (7.375) and recorded a fifth-place finish on the vault (8.05).
The Hodags had a solid day on the floor, where they placed three gymnasts in the top five positions. After Kuester and Sturtevant, freshman Bridget Koser finished fifth with a 7.625.
Balance beam which was typically a struggle for Rhinelander all season, turned out to be one of their strong events on the day. Alyssa Mitchell and Sturtevant both had no-fall routines, and the team only had three falls on the day.
The Hodags will have a break in competition and won't return to action until Thursday February 8th, when they host Medford, the defending GNC Small champions at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
