The Rhinelander High School golf team finished third in the final leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament held at Eagle River Golf Course on Thursday. The Hodags matched their best round of the year, but were three strokes behind Antigo and would finish in fourth place overall in the standings with 32 points.
Despite windy conditions on the course, Rhinelander still had a solid day and shot a 363. Antigo shot a 360 to finish second place on the day and third overall in the GNC with 34.5 points. Lakeland would finish first in the GNC standings and shot a 319 on the final leg marking their second straight perfect conference season. After RHS, Mosinee (364), Tomahawk (380), and Northland Pines (416) rounded out the conference lineup.
Kyle Bengtson of Lakeland was the only golfer to break an 80 on the day and won the individual conference title to edge his teammates Ansen Nomm and Kaeden Nomm.
Rhinelander had two golfers finish with Great Northern Conference honors in the individual all-conference standings; senior Nick Twite and freshman Kole Gechas. Twite would lead the Hodags and tied for seventh with round of 85. In the overall standings, Twite finished sixth and earned second team all-conference honors. While Gechas shot an 87 on the day and placed ninth. In the final standings, Gechas tied for 12th and received all-conference honorable mention.
