The Rhinelander High School golf team proved they are improving and making progress this season, as they shot their two lowest scores of the season when they competed in two-straight Great Northern Conference meets starting on Monday.
At Indianhead Golf Course in Mosinee on Monday, Rhinelander finished fourth in the second leg of the GNC and shot a 356. RHS followed that up on Tuesday with a 357 and finished fifth at Bass Lake Golf Club in Deerbrook.
Lakeland won both Monday and Tuesday with a 321 at Indianhead and a 312 at Bass Lake. Individually, Ansen Nomm of the Thunderbirds tied for first place both days. On Monday Nomm tied with John Birnbaum of Mosinee and Tuesday he tied with teammate Kyle Bengston. Nomm and Bengston are 1-2 in the GNC standings through the first three legs.
Despite the Hodags only placing one golfer in the top 10 Monday or Tuesday, they still showed improvement and all five varsity golfers were below 100 strokes both days. Senior Zach Olds finished with his season-best of a 79 and tied for fifth place at Indianhead. And after shooting a 47 on the front of Bass Lake, Olds finished strong and would finish with an 83 to tie for ninth place. In the conference standings, Olds now sits in eighth place with four legs left this season.
Will England and Nick Twite both recorded 91's for Rhinelander on Monday. While Joseph Schmitz shot a 95 and Nick Sandstrom rounded out the varsity lineup with a 99 and marked his first varsity start.
On Tuesday, Twite would finish in 11th only one stroke behind teammate Olds. Devon Gaber recorded a 94, England shot a 96, and Schmitz finished with a 99 at Bass Lake.
The Hodags will be back in action on Friday afternoon and will host the fourth leg of the Great Northern Conference meet at the Northwood Golf Club.
