In the Rhinelander High School girls' final Great Northern Conference match of the season, they defeated Antigo 8-0 Thursday on senior night. The 16 seniors saw action at the RHS soccer field and would make up the largest class that Coach Dan Millot has coached.
Seniors either scored or assisted in all eight goals on the night, to make the their final GNC win even more significant. RHS would control the match against the Robins and held a 42-1 advantage on total shots including putting 14 of their 20 second half shots on frame. The Hodags took a 5-0 lead in the first 45 minutes of action and never looked back.
The 16 seniors on the team include; Jada Appling, Claudia Azabal-Martin, Alayna Franson, Cayla Fritz, Elizabeth Glut, Maria Kipper, Maddie Meyer, Alyssa Mitchell, Livi Roberts, Ryan Roberts, Lauren Rosendahl, Carly Seidl, Anna Sturzl, Ella Tapanainen, Rachel Uhlarik, and Kaylee Vazquez.
Two of Rhinelander's senior captains would finish with half of the teams' goals on the night. Sturzl recorded a hat trick and teammate Franson added another. But Franson and Sturzl could have easily scored more on the night but focused on getting their fellow seniors touches.
Meyer also finished with two goals and would add one assist as well. While senior Lauren Rosendahl scored her first varsity career goal in the 41st minute. While Kipper and Glut also added assists in the win. Meyer assisted Brooke Mork in the final goal of the night on a high mid shot inside the 18.
Rhinelander finished second in the Great Northern Conference, breaking their seven-year title run to Ashland who took the crown Thursday after defeating Wausau Newman 8-0 on Thursday.
The Hodags finished their regular season with a 9-6-0 record and would draw a No. 1 seed for playoffs. Rhinelander will host Waupaca in the WIAA regional match Thursday at 5:00PM at the RHS soccer fields.
