The Rhinelander/Antigo girls' hockey team charted their fourth win against Medford this season on Thursday night. Northern Edge scored four goals in the second period to cruise to an 8-2 victory over the Raiders at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
Starting the scoring for the Edge was Kourtney Carrico, who put a shot past goalie Liz Brandner on pass from Evelyn LeVeque early in the first. The game remained close until Northern Edge rallied in the second period.
At 5:46 into the second, Ellen Padgett connected on a shot from the point for the Edges' second goal of the night. Padgett also added two assists on the night as well. Payton Bunnell would follow with a short-handed goal assisted by Padgett. And Bunnell would connect again less then a minute later to give the Edge a 4-0 advantage.
With only 1:05 left in the second period, Rhinelander's Madi Losch intercepted a Medford pass and skated up the ice and used a backhander to put another past Brandner. Rhinelander/Antigo took a 5-0 lead at the end of the second.
Northern Edge carried their momentum from the second period into the beginning of the final period. Losch and LeVeque each scored in the opening two minutes to put them up 7-0. Jade Forster would also score late in the third to put Rhinelander/Antigo up 8-0.
Emily Schafer, the Raiders' top offensive threat would take advantage and score late goals off a turnover and another on a rebound to put Medford on the board and avoid the shutout. But the early damage was already done, and the Edge earned the 8-2 win and fourth against Medford this season.
On the night, Northern Edge outshot the Raiders 37-19 and goalie Alicia Turunen finished the win with 17-saves.
Rhinelander/Antigo will host co-cop Lakeshore Lightning tonight at 5:00PM at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building in Antigo.
