The Rhinelander/Antigo girls' hockey team blanked Medford 9-0 on Tuesday at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building in Antigo. The Edge not only earned the shutout win, but seven players scored and eight other players charted assists.
Ellen Padgett and Payton Bunnell led the way and each finished with two goals and Madi Losch and Kourtney Carrico had three assists each in the victory.
On the night, the Edge would outshoot the Raiders 45-10 and most notable accomplishment is all 15 varsity players on the roster either scored or tallied an assist.
Northern Edge would take a 3-0 lead after the first period and Padgett got the scoring started on an assist from Carrico and Jade Forster at 7:18. Bunnell would follow and converted on a power play about two minutes later. And Evelyn LeVeque scored with just over two minutes left in the period.
It was a slow start in the second period, but once the Edge got back in sync they rallied for three goals in the a four-minute span and would take a convincing 6-0 lead.
Bunnell would strike her second goal of the night at 11:05 and two-and-half minutes later Gwen Frederickson scored on a powerplay. And Northern Edges' final goal of the period came from Antigo freshman Haley Thom, and it also marked her first career goal, about a minute after Frederickson's goal.
Rhinelander/Antigo would chart their seventh goal of the night at 5:46 into the final period, when Padgett scored on an assist from goalie Alicia Turunen. Nevaeh Forster scored a few minutes later. And Jade Forster closed out the Edges' scoring at 12:51.
Turunen along with Northern Edges’ defense was able to keep the Raiders off the board and limited their shots on the night. The line of Ashley Adams, LeVeque, and Carrico played a roll in four the teams’ goals. Turunen earned the shutout win and had 10 saves on the night.
Northern Edge advanced to 2-2-0-1 in the Great Northern Conference standings and are 6-11-1 overall this season. The Edge will be back in action on Monday when they host Northland Pines for a conference match at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building in Antigo. Faceoff is set for 7:00PM.
