The Rhinelander High School cross country team competed in the 2018 Waupaca Invitational Thursday and was led by senior harrier Bridger Flory. In the 5k course, Flory finished in fifth place overall. The RHS boys would finished 8th/11 while the girls placed 7th/10 in the tough course at Waupaca High School.
Wautoma finished first overall in the boys' division with 56 points and were followed by Seymour (80 points) and Winneconne (91 points). The Hodags in 8th place with 181 points finished ahead of Wrightstown, Amherst, and Iola-Scandinavia. Kordell Woyak of Wautoma finished first overall with a time of 17 minutes, 13.0 seconds.
While Winneconne finished first with 42 points in the girls' division. Marinette was runner-up (95 points) and Amherst placed third (102 points). The RHS girls in 7th had 173 points and finished ahead of Wautoma, Peshtigo, and Iola Scandinavia. Jada Beacom of Iola-Scandinavia won the race with a time of 20:00.7.
Flory led the way in 5th place with a time of 17:39.3 which was roughly two minutes quicker than the next Rhinelander harrier and was the only runner to crack the 18-minute barrier.
Sophomore Jacob Weddle finished 38th (19:19.0), sophomore JC Adams placed 43rd (19:41.4), and freshman Jaden Beske took 45th (19:45.3). Sophomore Daniel Goldsworthy (54th; 20:44.8) and freshman Cal Laggis (57th; 21:01.6) rounded out the varsity team.
On the girls' side, Rhinelander was again led by sophomore Abbie Henrichs who finished 22nd overall at 22:29.5 and was the only Hodag to crack 23-minutes.
Rhinelander girls 2nd-5th finishers were freshman; Sage Flory (31st; 23:20.2), Audrey Schiek (32nd; 23:20.2), Megan Brown (44th; 23:53.3), and Emma Germain (46th; 24:01.6). Sophomore Alison DeNamur (48th; 24:38.7) and senior Claire Bowman (52nd; 24:38.7) rounded out the varsity girls.
The Hodags only have two races left before they host the 2018 GNC meet on October 13th. First Rhinelander will head to Northland Pines on Tuesday and will close the week on Saturday at the Hatchet Invite.
The Rhinelander High School girls' JV cross country team had an impressive evening and finished 2nd out of five teams with five harriers in the top-12. The Hodags were led by sophomore Ella Schiek. In her second race of the season she finished runner-up at 23:15.7, but her time would have been 29th in the varsity race.
Junior Lexi Morrison finished 5th (24:51.1), freshman Liana Teter placed 8th (25:07.7), junior Val Dalka came in 9th (25:14.7), and junior Jenna Younker finished 12th (25:29.7). The girls' JV was rounded out by sophomore Delaney Chillemi (26th; 26:55.6), senior Abby Krueger (31st; 27:47.2), junior Kendra Durkee (42nd; 29:48.4), and senior Mattia Beske (46th; 30:53.7).
The RHS JV boys finished 5th out of six teams and was led by freshman Jack DeNamur in 21st with a time of 21:09.9. Sophomore Tristan Fuss (22nd; 21:10.4), sophomore Jakob Losch (26th; 21:28.7), freshman Kole Gechas (37th; 22:28.4), and freshman Jason Zheng (48th; 23:24.3) rounded out the JV.
