The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team was able to kick off their Great Northern Conference season on Thursday with a 5-2 road win over Pacelli. The early start to the season gave the Hodags an advantage as they seek their sixth straight conference title. RHS won three singles flights and added a pair of doubles wins at Goerke Park in Stevens Point on a chilly and windy evening.
Sophomore Jacob Weddle at No. 2 singles cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sam Lamotte of the Cardinals. At No. 3 singles senior Freddy Wisner earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Pacelli's Sam Basala. And closing out singles at the fourth flight, senior Ian Conkey defeated Jacob Mengel 6-2, 6-3. And at the top singles flight, senior Russell Benoy fellin straight sets to Charlie Kulick.
In doubles action, Rhinelander won at No. 3 doubles in straight sets while splitting a pair of three-setters in the top two flights. Senior Bridger Flory and Willia Berwig blanked Michael Barakeh and Mateo Koch 6-0, 6-0 at the third doubles flight. While the Hodags' top flight of seniors Logan Oestreich and Connor Young rallied back after falling 3-6 in the first-set to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-1.
While freshman Luke Ring and Elijah Evers started strong at No. 2 doubles and won 6-4 against Ben Kroening and Andrew Pisarski. But Kroening and Pisarski turned the tables and finished the set 6-0, 6-1.
The Hodags will be back in action for a non-conference invite held at at Wausau East High School Friday and Saturday. RHS is slated to play three duals Friday and two more Saturday. From there, Rhinelander will return to their GNC schedule and be on the road at Medford on Tuesday.
