The Rhinelander High School extended their winning streak to 15-games in a row on Friday night. The Hodags earned the 79-56 Great Northern Conference win at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. Senior Owen White led the way with 35-points to help lift RHS past the Eagles.
White would score Rhinelander's first seven points of the night and fellow senior Reese Flores hit a triple to put the Hodags up 10-2 in the opening minutes.
Northland Pines would pull within two-points midway through the first half after Trevor Williams crashed a rebound on his teammates missed free throw and scored inside. Jack Hayes followed with another Eagle offensive rebound and put back and Hunter Rose had a steal and scored in transition to draw with two at 23-21.
Rhinelander would take over from their and responded with a 9-1 to extend their lead in the final minutes of the first half. Senior Brad Quade connected on two free throws with just over three minutes remaining in the half, and would follow that up with a steal and an assist inside to White.
Flores also scored inside and White rally for back-to-back three-pointers as part of the run. And with only 5.5 seconds left in the half, White was fouled and knocked down both bonus free throws. And with 2.3 seconds Quade was fouled and also hit both bonus free throws to give RHS a 37-26 lead at halftime. White would score 22-points alone in the first 18-minutes.
It was a slow start for the Hodags in the opening minutes of the second half. It took Rhinelander over two-and-a-half minutes to score, when White scored on a traditional three-point play. It also sparked a 22-6 run for the Hodags.
Seniors Brad Comer and White led the run which included eight points for White and five points for Comer. White had two triples during the span and Comer had three free throws and a transition basket. Junior Howard closed the run with a baseline three to put Rhinelander ahead 59-34.
Before the starts were taken out, White had a steal and transition dunk with 4:30 left in the game to put the Hodags ahead by 30 points, 70-40. Down the stretch, Quade scored on a euro-step, Peyton Erickson connected from beyond the arc, and Sean Matthews scored inside and added two free throws.
White was the only Hodag to score in double-digit points and added 12 rebounds to his 35-points. In all, 10 total players scored for Rhinelander. Comer finished with nine points while Howard and Flores added seven points. Quade chipped in five and Shickert and Matthews each had four.
Hayes would lead Northland Pines with 14 points, and the Hodags' defense was able to hold Ryan Peterson to only 10 points. Peterson averaged 17.4 points in the GNC going into the contest.
The Hodags will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host Merrill for a non-conference contest. Tip-off is set for 7:15PM.
