The Rhinelander High School boys' basketball team would cash in on their seventh straight win after defeating Waupaca at Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium on Friday night. The Hodags had a big night from two seniors to push them past the Comets 67-36 and RHS advanced to 7-1 overall.
Seniors Brad Comer and Owen White led the way for Rhinelander, and each finished in double-digits and would outscore Waupaca alone 39-36. Comer would record the game-high of 22-points which included a pair of four-point plays. White would again chart a double-double with 17-points and nearly matched in rebounds with 15.
Rhinelander never trailed even after a slow start and both teams committing early turnovers. After about eight minutes of action, the two teams only combined for 10 total points. The next four and half minutes RHS would rally for 18 points, which included 15 from Comer to put the Hodags ahead 23-9.
The run would start with back-to-back triples from Comer, and his first four-point play at 8:08. Junior Howard and White would connect on back-to-back triples. And the Hodags' would cruise to a 34-15 at halftime advantage.
Rhinelander would again start the second half with a 14-2 run in which White scored nine points himself. The Hodags would eventually push their lead to 34-points. Senior Reese Flores made a big play in the second half after a drive and no-look dish back to White who easily scored inside.
Not only did the Hodags have an impressive offense in the second half, but more importantly they were able to lock down the Comets and held Waupaca to only 14-second half points and only four field goals. Justin Vaughn was Waupaca's top scorer, and finished with 17-points.
The Hodags will travel to Marshfield on Tuesday for a tough non-conference contest before they return to their Great Northern Conference schedule when they host Tomahawk on Friday.
