Randy Platek has the advantage on Chippewa Falls' Grant Schnidler during Saturday's WIAA Sectional in Merrill. As a third-seed, Platek's Cinderella run to the State Tournament struck midnight in overtime of the final match of the day (Laura Harvey/Antigo Daily Journal Photo).
MERRILL – Randy Platek’s run toward a WIAA State Tournament berth came to a disappointing end on Saturday evening as the 215-pounder was taken down in overtime, losing to Merrill’s Zach Wendorf by a final of 3-1 for the second and final qualifying spot.
Platek’s third place finish at Saturday’s WIAA Sectional in Merrill, coupled with a fourth place finish from fellow senior Mike Cinfio at 140 pounds means that for the first time since 2003 the Hodags will not be represented at the WIAA State Tournament.
“I was a little bit sad to lose a couple of seniors that I’ve known since they’ve been in kindergarten,” said Hodag Wrestling Coach Jim Kreitlow. “To see them progress all the way through the system and get better, it’s certainly disappointing not to see them go (to State).”
Platek’s day began with a first period pin of Chippewa Falls’ Gran Schindler, the second place finisher from the River Falls Sectional. In the semifinal, Platek ran into third-ranked Jordan Koranda and lost to him for the second Saturday in a row.
The wrestleback looked like last Saturday’s regional for Platek, who got another win over Wausau West’s Travis Teske before running into Wendorf.
Last week, Platek lost to Wendorf for second at Regionals by a 9-2 decsion. Saturday, the bout was much closer.
Randy wrestled really good today. It’s a shame and a disappointment that he didn’t make it to State. He wanted it and wrestled well enough to get there. I believe he got one point with a head throw (in the third period), but the ref didn’t give him any points. But it was a good effort, he had a great day.
Platek, who was not one of the favorites make it to State after taking third in his regional, finishes the season with a 28-14 record.
Things did not go as planned for Cinfio. After a second period pin of Eau Claire Memorial’s Niles Helsper, Cinifo lost to Antigo’s Jake Tatro in the semifinals. Tatro pinned Cinfio in the third period.
Cinfio followed that with a 14-4 lost to Logan Keding in the third place match. Even if Cinfio had won, he would not have had the chance to wrestle back for second. Tatro lost the championship match and would have been awarded second by rule had Cinfio defeated Keding.
Cinfio has been up and down all season as he has dealt with a condition Kreitlow described at Compartment Syndrome.
“He loses circulation in his arms and he loses strength,” Kreitlow added. “It’s effected him all year and today was wasn’t really good. It affected his wrestling.”
Cinfio finished the season 29-7.
Saturday brought to a close the season for the RHS Wrestling Team and the high school careers of two accomplished wrestlers.
“They are disappointed, but they are good kids,” Kreitlow said. “They realize that’s sometimes how things work. They’ll move on. They have a lot of their lives ahead of them and it’s time to move on to the next step. Today just didn’t go our way.”
