RHINELANDER – Seniors Jake Mahoney and Jon Palutke shared the Most Valuable Wrestler award on Sunday at the team’s year-end banquet at Rhinelander High School. Both qualified for this year’s WIAA State Tournament.

“I thanked the team for their hard work and dedication,” RHS Wrestling Coach Jim Kreitlow said of what he told the team. “They are a special group of kids to stick it out in face of low numbers. I look forward to working with the returning wrestlers next year and I wished the seniors (Nick Danielczak, Palutke and Mahoney) well.”

This year’s team finished eighth in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and will have some key pieces back next year, but the team needs to continue to work in the offseason to make sure they do not give back what they have gained over the last two year.

“I presented a challenge to returning wrestlers that the weight room needs to be their second home,” Kreitlow said. “It is up to them. I encourage other kids to come out for the sport. I'm convinced that we can produce quality wrestlers and would have a good team if we had more bodies.”

Junior Sam Schneider received the Mini-Machine Award, presented to the team’s hardest work. Fellow junior Jen Walker received the Character Award. Sophomore Randy Platek, who was a pleasant surprise as a Sectional qualifier this season was named the team’s most improved.
