Ryan Clark is no stranger to patrolling sidelines in the Great Northern Conference. Now, he will be doing it for a new school and with a new group of players.
Clark, who stepped down as the Northland Pines head boys’ basketball coach in March, was hired Monday by the School District of Rhinelander Board of Education as Rhinelander High School’s new girls’ basketball coach.
Rhinelander High School activities director Charlie LaHam said Clark and former RHS boys’ sophomore coach Frank Schlinsog received interviews for the position.
Clark’s program struggled to gain traction at Northland Pines, a traditional hockey hotbed. He went a combined 21-134 in seven seasons with the Eagles. His best year came in 2009-10 when he guided Pines to a 7-17 mark. While it did not always show up in the standings, Clark said there are many valuable lessons he takes away from his tenure in Eagle River.
Clark replaces Mark Jacobson, who spent less than one year on the job after Anita Mattek resigned and subsequently took a teaching position in Antigo. The Lady Hodags went 5-18 this season, but won four of their last seven games, including a victory at Lakeland in the first round of the WIAA& playoffs.
He will be the fourth coach of the RHS girls' basketball team in the last six season.
A full report will be published in Thursday's River News.
