RHINELANDER – Both the RHS Boys and Girls Track Teams took second place on Tuesday at the Hodag Invite at Mike Webster Stadium. It turned out to be a small meet with only three teams on the boys’ side and two teams on the girls’ side, but the competition was close throughout the day.
Rhinelander was edged out by Merrill by a single point in the boys’ division. Antigo beat Rhinelander 82-54 in the girls’ division.
“It was a real exciting meet,” RHS Track Coach Jim Moore said afterward. “We lost by one point, but some times you just don’t know. I think a lot of times they worry about first and second place, but in a meet like this third and fourth place could have been huge for us.”
Added Moore, “We still competed well. We had a lot of fun and the weather was nice. It was a nice day for the kids to compete and we had a lot of kids that competed. It was a win-win for us.”

The boys had seven first place finishes, with the girls took home eight firsts at Mike Webster Stadium in the Hodags’ lone home meet of the year.
Matt Furyk (pictured above, right) led the way for the Hodag sprinters, taking first in the 100 and 200 meter dash. He was also part of the victorious 4x200 meter relay. The Hodags also won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Rhinelander did well in the throwing events again as seniors Shane Kelly and Jake Mahoney took first and second in both shot put and discus.
“If you have good sprinters, you’re going to have good long jumpers, high jumpers and triple jumpers,” said Moore. “Our weights have been very solid with Shane and Jake.”
In the end, Rhinelander finished one point behind Merrill and 11 ahead of Antigo.
“We match up well with them and that’s a real nice competition for us,” Moore said of the Bluejays and Robins. “I’m sure with as close as we are, we’ll meet up in the near future, even when they head out (of the Wisconsin Valley Conference).”
Rhinelander did not have Furyk compete in the triple jump, or Eric Borchardt compete in the triple jump. Those were two noticeable lineup changes as the team tries to taper before next Tuesday’s Wisconsin Valley Conference Outdoor meet.
“Those legs have been a little tender so we’re actually trying to position ourselves to compete a little better at the Valley meet next week,” commented Moore. “You want to be competitive and we were, but you also want to give some guys a rest and that worked out real well for us.”
The Hodag girls won nearly half of the events despite their short roster. First place finishes for the Hodags included Allie Lodholz (triple jump), Paula Nowak (high jump), Kayci Gruening (pole vault), Ellen Bognar (100 meter), Jen Walker (200 meter), Karina Katchko (3200 meter), and the 4x800 and 4x200 meter relays.
“The girls don’t have a chance a lot of time to finish first and I think its great for them to come down toward the end of the season and compete well,” added Moore. “That’s nice for those gals. Ellen Bognar (pictured above, left) did well in the 100-meter dash, the 4x2 won. (We had) a lot of first places. It was a fun night for the kids. They’re working hard and that’s all you can ask for.”
The Hodags will use this week to prepare for the WVC Outdoor next Tuesday. They Boys’ outdoor will be at Merrill, while the Girls outdoor will take place at Stevens Point.
