RHINELANDER – The RHS Girls Tennis Team made a big turnaround in the 2007 season, going from eighth place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference to fourth in the Valley in just one year.
While it was the underclassmen that had the spotlight with an impressive singles campaign, coach Bob Heideman told those present at Sunday’s awards banquet that the success would not have been possible, if not for this year’s senior class.
Heideman led off the awards portion of the banquet by presenting each of his five senior captains with a trophy. He said that it was key that Sadie Bassette, Sam Brown, Anica Cihla, Demi Danner and Brittney LaFond each “bought in to working at getting better.”

Along with the work in the offseason, Heideman said that the emergence of junior Allie Fortier at number four singles, and the Hodags early season rise to first place in the conference were important.
“Getting to first place was important because it was a tangible ‘fruit of their labor.” Heideman added.
The coach also added some insight on a move that was considered, but never made. He said he thought of pairing Emily Heideman and Allie Fralick together at one doubles, figuring they would have a shot to get to state as a tandem. Coach Heideman said his daughter declined the move because she felt it would have hurt the team as a whole.
Afterward, coach and daughter shared a poignant moment, giving each other a hug.
Heideman also gave thanks to all the parents as well as the assistants and volunteers that helped out the program this year.
In terms of awards, freshman Priyanka Sikka, who advanced to the second round of the WIAA Individual Girls Tennis Tournament, was named the team’s MVP. Bassette was voted the team’s most improved player. Jamie Kuczmarski was the MIP award on JV.
Junior Nicole Shepard was named Miss Hustle, and fellow junior Allie Fortier earned the Three-Setter Netter award for having the most three set victories this season.
