The Rhinelander Nordic ski team has a lot to look forward to this season. They began practicing in late November, to be ready for their first meet that took place on December 10-11, 2011. With 2012, comes a fresh start with some new faces on these young ski team's, as well as some seasoned veterans. Though the snow has been falling and temperatures have been dropping, the energy amidst the team is rising. The girls and boys teams are coached by Karen Cook and assisted by Scott Bornberg. Both are very excited for the lone senior Annie Dobbins to be named captain of a strong girls team. Returning juniors Claire Tracy and Hillary Wall are both coming off great cross country running seasons. Other returning juniors are Kiah Sexton and Lindsey Lieck. The only sophomore on the team, Daria Katchko, is coming off a great swim season. She is also the co-captain. There are also four freshman on the team this year: Erin Tenderholt, Annika Hempel, Laina Lyman, and Tessa Bloch.
The boys team has one senior, Andrew Kroll, who is also team captain. He took last year off while he was on an exchange program. This year there are no juniors participating on the team. The sophomores had great results last year and are setting higher goals for themselves. Co-captains are Lou Bassette and Drew Stafford. Freshmen include Zach Breneman, Kody Blacyki, Zane Tischendorf, and Bobby Powers.
The political rallies in Madison last year forced cancellations to the Nordic sprints so the RHS Nordic team wasn't able to have their last event of the year but this year will hopefully be different. Both teams have competed in four competitions so far, Lou Bassette placed 12th and Drew Stafford placed 14th at the Wausau Invite. For the girls Claire Tracy and Hillary Wall both placed in the top ten, Claire was 8th and Hillary was 9th, also at the Wausau Invite. Also eight Nordic skiers earned letters last year as they hope to do the same this year with a stronger performance at state.
The Rhinelander Hodag Nordic ski team is full of potential and on the cusp of a great season, best of luck and success to both teams.
