RHINELANDER – RHS Girls Hockey Coach Wil Losch has resigned from that position, electing to spend more time with his family and his position with the school district, enhancing its charter school programs.
Losch turned in his letter of resignation this week and informed the team of his decision in a meeting Thursday afternoon.
“What it comes down to is both family obligations and other professional obligations we're pulling me too strongly to be able to dedicate the energy I felt was needed to be an effective varsity coach,” Losch told HodagSports.com Thursday evening.
Losch coached the program in its first two years of existence, leading it to an 11-26-2 record and its first WIAA playoff win this past February.
“He’s leaving on good terms,” says RHS Activities Director Justin Szews. “He’s very much respected by me and I believe most of his players would say the same. I mix the disappointment and the sadness of losing a good head coach with the understanding of why these sorts of things happen.”
Despite his departure, Losch believes that the group of girls the team currently has will help carry it into the future.
“We’ve got a classy team and a classy program and the girls we have on the team, I’ve appreciated being around them more than any group of students the last couple of years,” Losch said. “I wished them the best. They’re still going to have a great high school hockey experience. They are the core of the team.”
Along those lines, it will be the commitment of the youth in the community that will decide where the program heads in the years to come.
“In terms of the immediate future, I think they’ve got a great one or two years ahead,” Losch said. “They’ve got a great core of junior and senior players. The long term, I think that depends on how many girls want to play hockey in this community.”
Losch added that since he is not leaving the district, he still plans on being a fan.
Now the search for a new coach begins and Szews already has a target set for when to have a new coach hired.
“There will be a posting that will go out,” says Szews regarding the girls hockey coaching position. “My goal would be to certainly have by early this summer (June) a candidate hired. There are a number of candidates that I hope throw their hats in the ring that have been around girls and boys hockey here in Rhinelander. There are a lot of good youth coaches in our community.”
