MADISON – Northern Edge Senior Goalie Johanna Sommers and sophomore Nikki Kloes were named to the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association’s All-State Team as Honorable Mention selections at the association’s banquet Thursday evening.
It was be Sommers’ second time on the All-State Team. She also received Honorable Mention as a sophomore. It is Kloes's first appearance on the All-State team.
"I was pleased to see the Northern Edge represented at the All-State banquet," said head coach Wil Losch, who was with Sommers and Kloes in Madison to receive the awards. "Both JoJo and Nikki deserved the recognition."
Sommers went 7-16 this season with a 91.0 save percentage and a 3.80 goals against average. Sommers set school records for most saves in a season (904) and in a game (75 against Keweenaw) this year.
"JoJo has been a mainstay as our tender for four years, stopping over 90% of the shots she faced," Losch stated. "Much of the success we have experienced is due to that fact. Right now, looking ahead to next year, there is a void to be filled. Stepping into that position with the ability to play it at a level JoJo did will not be easily done."
Kloes finished tied for fifth most goals scored in the State this season with 31. She also had four assists. She set program records for most goals in a season (31) and in a game (5 against Tomahawk).
"Nikki brought some scoring attention to our program," added Losch. "And if she wants, there can be plenty more of that ahead of her. I hope that Nikki looked at a lot of the older girls getting recognized and saw where she wants to be next year or her senior year. With the proper drive and off season work, she will be there next year."
