RHINELANDER – Freshman Elle Spieglehoff, who missed qualifying for the WIAA State meet by mere thousandths of a point, was named the RHS Gymnastics Team’s Most Valuable Gymnast at the team’s banquet Sunday at Holiday Acres.

Speigelhoff was the team’s leader in the All-Around most of the season and set the tone for what should be a successful RHS Career over the next three years.

“She always wanted to do better,” coach Jen Pooch told the audience on Sunday. “It’s hard when you have that much pressure on you coming in and knowing that you have to perform at a certain level. She surpassed our expectations. She has goals and she’s ready for the next couple of years.”

It was one of several team awards handed out on Sunday. Fellow Freshman Megan Thornton was named the team’s Most Dedicated.

“We couldn’t say more about her as an athlete,” Pooch said. “She’s had amazing improvement throughout the year. She had skills coming in as a freshman, but she’s just the hardest worker I’ve seen come through in a long time.”

Sophomore Jackie Guth was named Most Improved and senior Megan Piehl took home the Spirit Award. Alicia Lundberg and Jessica Bulko were named Most Improved and Mosted Dedicated for JV, respectively.

The Hodags went from a 104 in their second meet of the season, to a 124 at conference. With one outgoing senior being replaced by nine incoming freshmen, the future looks promising for the team.

“Jumping 20 points really say how much the worked and what they were able to achieve,” said Pooch. “As coaches, that’s so rewarding, knowing that the hard work with them is paying off and that they are having fun.”

The team also named its captains for the upcoming season. Senior-to-be Olivia Esqueda will share the honor with Thornton.
