RHINELANDER – Senior Stephanie Walker and sophomore Meaghan Patterson were named co-most valuable gymnasts by their teammates and were presented their award on Monday during the team’s year-end banquet at Rhinelander High School.
Walker qualified for State in the uneven bars and finished 15th. Patterson was consistently the team’s highest scorer in the all-around.
Other awards handed out on Monday included the most dedicated gymnast, which went to junior Erin Nowak and the most improved gymnast, which was presented to freshman Olivia Esqueada.
Nowak was also named a team captain for the 2008-09 season. She will join fellow senior-to-be Allie Fortier in the captaincy. Fortier was a co-captain with Walker this year.
All and all, coach Justin Clapper was pleased with how his team did this year, given that it had lost its top gymnast from the year before.
“We were not expected to do well,” Clapper said of how his team was predicted to fare. “I though we had a chance to be decent. I was very pleased with the way we did. When it came time to get serious, we got it done. They’re having fun. I couldn’t be prouder of this team.”
