RHINELANDER – Northwood Golf Club was playing like the righteous site for the final round of the Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament. Strong winds and fast conditions made teams take notice that Friday’s final leg is going to be no walk in the park.

The Hodags were not immune to the tough conditions on their home course, yet dealt with it better than a couple of teams, placing seventh at Tuesday’s Hodag Invite.

All nine teams from the Wisconsin Valley Conference were present Tuesday, prepping for the Friday’s final round. The Hodags, who shot 370, bested Antigo by four shots and Marshfield by eight.

“The high winds played a hand and the fast Northwood conditions pushed the scoring up,” said coach and Northwood PGA Pro Dan Buckley. “This was our best finish against conference foes in quite sometime. We are all looking forward to Friday.”

Senior Dan Konicek (pictured above, right) and sophomore Tyde Terzinski paced the Hodags with rounds of 90. Nick Cirilli saved par from the greenside bunker on 16 (pictured left) and went on to post a round of 94. Matt Curran carded a 96 and A.J. Berrell finished with a 98.

Wisconsin Rapids won the meet with a score of 321, but Merrill was right behind with a 323. Wausau East’s Anthony Aicher was the medallist with a round of 76. Aicher is the individual leader after two rounds of the Valley tournament at plus-three through 36 holes.

All of this will set up for an exciting finish to the conference tournament on Friday.
