RHINELANDER – The RHS Girls Soccer Team will have to wait until Saturday to try and take fourth in the Wisconsin Valley Conference outright, after losing 2-0 to Wausau West on Tuesday at the RHS Soccer Field.
Rhinelander had the edge in the first half, but could not capitalize. That provided West with some motivation in the second half to take the win and pull to within a game of the Hodags in the Valley standings.
“I thought we outplayed Wausau West in the first half and we just couldn’t find the back of the net,” said coach Dan Millot after the game. “We gave the ball away too easily. We didn’t pass well in the attacking third and we didn’t really get the best scoring opportunities.”
West broke the game open in the second half, scoring the first goal on a shot from roughly 40 yards that rode the wind and snuck past the Hodag defense. The second goal came off a direct free kick from about 20 yards.
“In the second half, I think West came out with a little bit more spirit,” Millot added. “We just didn’t play well. We gave the ball away too easily. Again, we had opportunities to score, we put pressure on their net. We hurt ourselves with mistakes.”
Further statistics from the game were unavailable at the time of post.
Rhinelander drops to 5-4-0 in the conference can still finish fourth in the conference with a win or tie against D.C. Everest on Saturday night in Weston or a tie when Everest and West get together on Thursday.
