Dan Kellen (background) and Kyle Comer (foreground) can only look on after getting injured in the second quarter of Friday's game against Merrill. With one key player sidelined, and another severely limited in the second half, the Hodag succumb to the Bluejays, losing 28-0 (Jim Hext photo).
RHINELANDER – In the end injuries to two star players were too much to overcome.
Captains Kyle Comer and Dan Kellen went down on back-to-back series in the second quarter with the scored tied 0-0 with the 11th ranked Merrill Bluejays at Mike Webster Stadium. But Merrill would score on its first four possessions of the second half to beat the Hodags 28-0 on Friday.
The news got worse for Rhinelander after the game as it was confirmed that Comer broke his right ankle after getting twisted in the pile on a quarterback keeper in the second quarter. He was getting a cast put on Friday night and will likely miss the rest of the season.
It overshadowed what was a great first half for the Hodag defense, which forced three turnovers and kept the Bluejays scoreless.
Kellen took Comer's place at quarterback, but was hurt blitzing Merrill QB Sam Arneson on the next defensive series. He had ice on his right knee through halftime and only could play a handful of downs in the second half.
That meant the Hodags had to hand the reins of the offense over to sophomore Alec Baumgartner for the rest of the game. The offense sputtered, amassing only 99 total yards and 16 after halftime.
“We had some things prepared,” said RHS Football Coach Jim Moore. “When Dan came in we had to change some things a little bit and when Alec came in, he felt comfortable with stuff and I thought he did a nice job in there. I can't recall the last time we had the number three quarterback (playing).”
Moore did not know the severity of Comer's injury immediately after the game, but was already making contingency plans incase the injury proved to be serious.
“We might have to decide to if we're going to have to go with Alec or Dan at quarterback,” he said. “Dan's been a tailback. Alec and Tyler Thorsen are out two and three quarterbacks. We'll make a decision early next week.”
After getting back into the game, Moore was hopeful that Kellen would be fine for next Friday's contest with Menominee.
Despite the injuries, the Hodags kept Merrill off the board in the first half, forcing and recovering fumbles on three consecutive drives that had moved into Rhinelander territory. That included back-to-back fumble recoveries in the redzone.
“The kids are starting to fly around a bit more and make plays,” said Moore. “The wet probably had a little bit to do with it, but we got on the football. I was proud with the way the kids responded and it was a very exciting first half for us.”
But Merrill adjusted in the second half. They came out with nine consecutive runs plays and then let the UW-Madison recruit Arneson air it out. He connected on touchdown passes off 17, 46 and 31 yards all in the third quarter as the score ballooned from 0-0 to 22-0. Arneson finished the night 10 of 13 through the air for 177 yards and three TD, plus another 53 yards on the ground.
“Sam Arneson's a real nice ball player and they've got a lot of nice players on that squad,” Moore said. “They came out and had a pretty good strategy for the second half and we couldn't stick with them.”
Rhinelander's defense has been inconsistent this year, with three scoreless quarters and three quarters in which it has given up two or more touchdowns.
“We were pleased with the effort, we just talked about putting two halves together,” said Moore. “Hopefully we build off this and try to improve for next week.”
