RHINELANDER – It’s game, set, and seemingly match in the race for the 2008 Wisconsin Valley Conference Tennis Title. Stevens Point put to bed almost any upset notions the RHS Boys Tennis Team had in mind, defeating the Hodags 6-1 in a battle for first place Tuesday at the RHS Tennis Courts.

The win puts SPASH 22 points ahead of Rhinelander entering the Wisconsin Valley Conference Meet. The Hodags will have at least a 10-point lead over third place for Friday’s meet.

“Conference-wise, this puts Point in a position that will be very difficult to catch,” said coach Bob Heideman after the matches. “The battle may be for second and to see it we can pick up some better seeds for the subsectional on Monday.”

Rhinelander needed a 7-0 sweep take the conference lead to the tournament. While the team knew 7-0 might have been a reach, it thought a win was not out of the question. Point put that notion to bed with five straight-set wins.

“Top to bottom Stevens Point is a tough team,” added Heideman. “At every position they are a one or two seed in our conference. They came to our courts and handed it to us. Gotta give them credit. We had good effort and never gave up. We walked off the court with our heads up.”

Rhinelander’s only win came at one singles where Rahul Jain (pictured above) defeated Elliot O’Neal in what was a likely WVC Championship preview. Jain won 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. It was the first time Jain pulled off a three-set win in his high school career.

“In the first set, Rahul was getting the shots he wanted, but he was netting his shots,” commented Heideman. “He went down 0-3 in the second set, then started to hit his shots and worked his way to 4-3. From then on, he dominated the match.”

Shane Polzin had a good battle at three singles, but lost in three sets. Andy Bognar won five games in a set against Will Peck at two singles and the three doubles team of Dan Barbian and Matt Peacock took four games in the first set of their match.

Both teams now set their sights on Friday’s Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament in Wausau.
