RHINELANDER – Junior Ben Lonsdorf was named the RHS Boys Swim Team’s Most Valuable Swimmer on Sunday during the team’s year-end banquet at Holiday Acres.
Lonsdorf, who earned his second and third runner-up finishes at State in February, had a decorated season that included two sectional championships and a Wisconsin Valley Conference title in the 100 Freestyle.
He was also named the team’s most dedicated swimmer for a second consecutive year.
He and fellow senior-to-be Adam Schneider will share the captaincy in 2009. Those two, along with Alex Jones, Joel McReynolds, Nick Cirilli and Andrew Baker earned their letter in swimming this year. Freshman Cody Drescher did not letter, but was named the team’s most improved swimmer.
During the banquet Laggis said that Baker, who went through four years of swimming, should be an example for the team.
“Andrew Baker is a true swim team success story,” Laggis told HodagSports.com. “He went from a non-swimmer his freshman year, to a senior (and) team captain that finished in the top five in his events at conference and at sectionals. I hope that other non-swimmers and the new swimmers we had on the team this year realize that they have the potential to swim well and contribute to the success of the entire team.”
While the team will lose only two swimmers from this year’s squad, only 10 swimmers will return for next year, making individual effort and in-school recruiting keys for the team in the offseason.
“One main point that Coach (Dan) Jesse and I stressed at the banquet is the way the team improved throughout the season and that if we keep improving we have the opportunity to move up in the conference next year,” Laggis added. “And also to work to recruit new swimmers.”
