STEVENS POINT – For the first time in school history, the RHS Boys Swim Team will not be represented at the WIAA State Meet. The Hodags fell short in Sectionals on Saturday, taking fifth out of ten teams overall.

Rhinelander's 200 Freestyle Relay of Alex Jones (pictured), Tim Schmidt, Krisz Pallagi and Cody Drescher took fourth place. Drescher took fifth in the 500 Freestyle, Jones was fifth in the 100 Freestyle and McReynolds took sixth in the 100 Butterfly, but none of the times will be fast enough to qualify for State.

“We really do have a slow sectional compared to the other ones,” said Hodag Swim coach Amber Laggis. “If you don’t win or finish in the top two, you really are not going to have a chance coming from our sectional. I knew it was going to be really tough.”

Jones dropped over a second from his seed time in the 100 Freestyle to finish fifth. Drescher dropped over four seconds off his time in the 500 Free.

“For him to drop the time that he dropped was incredible,” Laggis said of Jones. “He had a great time and was really excited about it. I thought it was a really excellent swim for him.”

McReynolds came in seeded third in the 100 Butterfly, but was slower than his qualifying time, posting a 1:01.77. Rice Lake’s Nick Solum quickly erased any hopes anyone else had of winning that event, dropping over four seconds off his seed time, winning in 56.99 seconds.

The Hodags also got top eight finishes from Drescher (7th) in the 200 Freestyle and Tim Schmidt in the 200 (8th) and 500 Freestyle (7th). Drescher, Schmidt, Joey Virgilio and Jones were sixth in the 400 Free Relay. Noah Lundmark, Wyatt Keiffer, Pallagi and Viriglio were seventh in the 200 Medley Relay.

“I really think our swimmers had some good times,” Laggis said. “They really did a lot better (than at conference). A lot of those first-year swimmers got to swim today. Especially the kids that are going to be around for the next couple of years, I was really pleased with how they preformed today.”

While the performances were good, it still was not enough to get Rhinelander to State. It’s believed to be the first time in the program’s 54 years of existence that has happened.

With a referendum looming on Tuesday, and the pool’s closure a distinct possibility if it fails, Saturday may have been Rhinelander last shot to get to Madison.

“Looking at the position we’ve been in, I think we did a great job,” Laggis said looking at the season in retrospect given the team’s uncertain future. “I think the boys should be proud of how they finished their season. It’s hard to go in there and swim against teams like Ashwaubenon and Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door. They are bigger than us and haven’t had to face and overcome some of the challenges that we have.”
