RHINELANDER – No one was bashful when it came to putting the rock toward the cylinder on Friday night as the School District of Rhinelander Faculty battled the Rhinelander High School Seniors in the annual charity basketball game at the RHS Gym.
The two teams combined to take 123 shots, 44 of which were behind the arch. In the end, the Faculty converted a little better and defeated the Seniors 54-46.
The Faculty trailed only once in the game, early in the first quarter. They built a 12-point lead by halftime and a 19-point lead late in the third, before watching the Seniors race to within four.

The star of the game was RHS JV Basketball Coach Josh Jaeger, who outscored the seniors 15-14 by himself in the first half. He finished with a game-high 28 points and was a factor both in the post, and from the outside where he knocked down three triples.
“Definitely,” Jaeger said when asked if it was his new, semi-aerodynamic mohawk haircut that helped his game. “I’ve got to get into the character as much as possible, get the fans into it. That’s what it’s all about, coming out here and having fun for a good cause.”
Jaeger was the show for the Faculty as no one else scored in double-digits.
“It’s hard to score when Josh Jaeger is making all the shots,” RHS Boys Basketball Coach Rich Fortier, who scored nine points, said tongue-in-cheek. “It was better than last year. I made a couple shots, but the best part is that we won. Josh was kind of a one-man band and we just did what we had to do to win a basketball game. It was fun.”
“It was tough to guard Jaeger,” added Nate Ruids, who led the Seniors with 14 points. “He scored every time. We just didn’t seem to have an answer for him.”
Both teams started the game cold from the field. The Seniors took their only lead at 4-3 with 3:47 to play in the first quarter. From there, it was all Faculty for the rest of the first half. A 22-8 run put the staffers in control by 13 late in the second.
The Seniors scored the first six points of the second half to trim the lead to six, but the Faculty went off again, going on a 16-3 run to take a seemingly insurmountable 19-point lead.
Cold shooting was part of the story for the Seniors, who were 31-percent from the field and ice cold from the outside. They missed their first 19 3-point attempts before Brock Terzinski tickled the nylon from the perimeter in the third quarter. The team finished 3 of 27 from distance.
The Seniors went on an 8-0 run to start the fourth. Rudis led the charge scoring nine of the team’s first 11 points of the quarter. Soon the staff’s lead was down to 48-44. From there, a quick five-point spurt from the staff including a three-point play by Jaeger put the game away.
Attendance was probably hindered a bit by the Badger game, which was in progress when the Student and Staff jumped ball. Those who showed up were treated to a great game with their admission benefiting the American Cancer Society.
“This is a great time,” Fortier said. “This is kind of a fun ending to a basketball season every year.”
For the seniors it is one more chance to play together on the RHS Court.
“We’ve been playing together since third and fourth grade,” said Rudis. “So it’s nice to play together one more time. I wish we could have won.”
The night was about putting on a show. Charlie Grill, who scored 12 for the Seniors, probably had the highlight of the night when he dribbled the ball between the legs of a defending Mike Velis at the timeline and went the rest of the way for the lay-up.
Jaeger was definitely into the game, pounding his chest after each of his four blocked shots.
“I had to reminisce of my younger days and act as young as possible at times,” he said. “A few more years, I probably won’t be able to do it, so I’ve got to do it while I can.”
After three installments, the Faculty leads the series 2-1. Their last win was in 2006, when they won 63-49. The students won last year 63-58.
