WAUSAU – The RHS Baseball Team struggled against left-hander Dan Genrich on Monday, striking out 15 times and failing to record a hit in a 7-0 loss to the Wausau West Warriors.
The Hodags had baserunners as Genrich walked five and hit another, but the team was unable to figure out the hard throwing lefty.
“He threw pretty hard and had some movement on his fastball,” said coach Joe Waksmonski, describing Genrich’s performance. “He really didn’t throw his curveball that much, he was just effectively wild. He was all over the zone and our hitters couldn’t get a lock on where he was trying to work them. Of the 15 strikeouts, only one was looking. Our guys were hacking away. They were just missing.”
Rhinelander has struggled against a pair of lefties over the last couple of games. The team was one-hit by Stevens Point’s Paul Buchkowski in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Waksmonski says the difficulty came from the caliber of the pitcher and not the hand they used to throw the baseball.
“They are left-handers, but first of all they are the hardest throwers we’ve seen all year. It’s not just because their lefties, we can’t hit them. These aren’t lefties that are throwing 70’s. They are throwing low to mid 80’s. They are good, decent pitchers that happen to be left-handed.”
Sam Huebner took the loss for Rhinelander and fell to 1-2 on the season. He gave up six earned runs and nine hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked two as West scored once in the second and third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth.
“Sam did okay. It’s just that unfortunately for him he had to be perfect today to keep up with Genrich,” added Waksmonski. They hit him around a little bit with a home run and a double, but they were able to get those single in a row. They were able to get production throughout the whole order.”
Rhinelander is now 1-9 at the halfway point of the regular season. With a rematch against the Warriors at Stafford Field looming on Thursday, the Hodags are going to work hard in the batting cage to make sure that they do not suffer the same fate again.
“We’re going to try take care of some of our mistakes hitting wise, shorting up our trigger and trying to put the ball in play,” said Waksmonski.
