RHINELANDER – Twins Amy and Andrew Babcock were named the Girls and Boys Most Valuable Snowboarders Sunday when the RHS Alpine Ski Team held its year-end banquet at Holiday Acres.

The award was based on their average finish over the year at Northern Ski League races and the Wisconsin High School State Meet. Grant Olson and Sam Mahner where named the Most Valuable Skiers.

Amy Babcock became Rhinelander’s first ever state snowboard champion with a monster performance on the second day of the State Meet. Andrew Babcock won an NSL race this season and finished fourth at state.

Olson was the lone Hodag Skier to qualify for State and Mahner finished 14th in the NSL Standings.

Five athletes received Most Improved honors. Joel Raths was the team’s most improved snowboarder. Sam Gisselman and Brett Jewell shared the honor in boys’ downhill. Katie Lindner and Lyndsay Stroede split the honor in girls’ downhill.

“We had a lot of success and we want to keep striving for more,” coach Rod Olson told the crowd summing up the season. “We’re graduating only a few athletes this year, so we should be able to put together an even stronger team next year.”

The good news is that their will be a team next year, and for probably at least four more years after that. The bad news, according to Olson is that the program’s budget will likely get cut to $5,000 down from $7,000 this past season.

“We are allowed to exist, but the support for us to exist is not where we need it to be,” he said. “With inflation and the growth of the team, we will have to do quite a bit of fundraising in the future. We still need more equipment, more opportunities to be on the snow and it would be nice to compensate our volunteer coaches.”

Olson says the team plans to hold it spaghetti dinner again next fall at Holiday Acres. He also encouraged parents to volunteer at Hodag Country Fest to help raise funds.
