RHINELANDER – Seniors cleaned up on awards Sunday night at the RHS Alpine Ski Team's Banquet at the Haven Restaurant.
Grant Olson, Sam Mahner, Andrew Babcock and Amy Babcock all won Most Valuable Honors, while Mahner and fellow senior Ethan Bowen scored Most Improved Awards. Underclassmen Brett Jewell, Sam Gisselman, and Kelsie Prahl also took home Most Improved honors.
Olson, who finished sixth this season in the Northern Ski League and became just the fifth Rhinelander skier to compete at the Eastern High School Nationals, was the runaway winner for Boys Most Valuable Skier.
Mahner went from outside of the top ten last year to second this year in the Northern Ski League. That earned her Girls Most Valuable and Most Improved Skier.
The Babcocks, who between them lost one race leading up to State were the team's Most Valuable Smowboarders. Both won Northern Ski League individual titles in a landslide. Amy Babcock finished second at State this February, after winning the crown last year.
In just two short seasons, both Jewell and Gisselman have become more consisitent on the slopes, and had some of their best runs of their careers this year. Gisselman was 12th in Super G at Ski Brule. Jewell cracked the top 20 with a 19th place finish in Giant Slalom at Granite Peak.
In his first year out for the sport, Ethan Bowen placed fifth overall in the NSL in Boys Snowboard and sixth at State, Rhinelander's best finish this year. Prahl, a freshman, got better as the season went along and took third in the NSL and sixth at State.
